The exhibition « Diego Giacometti at the musée Picasso » explores the genesis of the exceptional commission assigned to Diego Giacometti for the Musée national Picasso-Paris on the occasion of its opening in October 1985.
This remarkable set of 50 pieces, consisting of chairs, benches, lamps and tables, exclusively created for the hotel Salé, represents the climax of Diego Giacometti’s work by executing its last commission before his death in July 1985. “Artisan-poet” according to the expression of Jean Leymarie, Diego Giacometti offers in this furniture a range of different facets of his universe: the taste for nature and plants, the reading of the ancient sources, Greeks and Etruscan, the aspiration of creating a real “geometry in the air”. The bronze and resin furniture, nowadays inseparable of the hotel Salé’s decoration will be dialoguing with the original plasters created by the artist. The presentation of his artist's studio collection, acc ompanied by a selection of previously unseen photographs and archives will allow situating this commission in its own context of creation.
The exhibition will also present the new benches de signed for the Musée national Picasso-Paris in the framework of a partnership with ECAL/Ecole cantonale d’art de Laus anne and the Tectona society.
