People's Biennal al Mocad

People's Biennial is an exhibition series conceived by artist Harrell Fletcher and curator Jens Hoffmann in 2009. It examines the work of artists and other creative individuals, who operate outside the conventional art world. As such it recognizes a wide array of artistic expression present in many communities across the United States. In covering the little known, the overlooked, the marginalized, and the excluded, the project offers a view into a diverse range of creative practices in America today. The People’s Biennial also proposes an alternative to the standard contemporary art biennial, which mostly focuses on art from a few select cities (New York, Los Angeles, occasionally Chicago, Miami or San Francisco). It questions the often exclusionary and insular process of selecting art that has at times turned the spaces where art is exhibited into privileged havens seemingly detached from the realities of everyday life.

Following the People’s Biennial 2010, which focused attention on underrepresented artists from five diverse non-art center geographical regions in the United States (Portland, Oregon; Rapid City, South Dakota; Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Scottsdale, Arizona; and Haverford, Pennsylvania), the People’s Biennial 2014 will attempt again to showcase artwork that might otherwise not be shown in a museum context.

For the second iteration of this exhibition series the curators have asked 17 recognized artists based in a wide set of locations around the United States to connect and collaborate with creative individuals they personally know who are not part of the art world in any way. These solo presentations will each be displayed in free-standing structures within the refurbished Woodward Gallery of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit creating a creative community of the unknown, overlooked surprising.

About the curators:

Harrell Fletcher has produced a variety of socially engaged, participatory projects since the early 1990s for institutions, museums and exhibitions around the world. He received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and his MFA from the California College of the Arts. He studied organic farming at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He went on to work on a variety of small farms, which impacted his work as an artist. He participated in the 2004 Whitney Biennial and is the 2005 recipient of the Alpert Award in Visual Arts. In 2002 Fletcher created Learning To Love You More with Miranda July, a participatory website now in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Fletcher is an Associate Professor of Art and Social Practice at Portland State University.

Jens Hoffmann is the Deputy Director and Head of Exhibitions and Public Programs of The Jewish Museum, New York and Guest Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. He has curated more than 50 exhibitions internationally since the late 1990s, including the 2nd San Juan Triennial (2009), the 12th Istanbul Biennial (2011) and the 9th Shanghai Biennale (2012). Hadash, Latifa Echakhch

Adolescence, with its assorted baggage of mixed ideals, has a certain naiveté about it.
Looking back at that, which turned us both outward and against everything, we cannot but do it with bemused sympathy. That courage to leap from up high, to play among the gravestones, to pen manifestos on peace and friendship.

Such writings may have been kept secret, hidden for decades in the pages of diaries, and youthful defiance is surely made easier when roaming in bands; the same goes for the ground on which one plays, whose sheer gravity is easily forgotten by youthful distractions. Yet at the time we were quite certain of that, that we were the new. Such are the moments that Latifa Echakhch evokes in her current exhibition, instances of a time elapsed and forgotten.

Carian Hmimar, which translates as “reddish shantytown,” refers to Mediouna, a town in the vicinity of Casablanca, Morocco. A peripheral implant on the city’s outskirts, its children have made the adjacent cemetery into a playground, coming there regularly to play.

The single-shot video shows two boys at play. Shot at nightfall, the boys heckle one another and play at throwing pebbles. The surrounding graveyard is barely visible at first, as we are at the cemetery’s older quarter, where gravestones are overgrown with brambles and bushes. We only perceive them towards the end of the video, at the right edge of the frame, when the camera moves away from the children who have now concluded their game.

A small vignette of everyday life in the Moroccan slum of Carian Hmimar. It is filled with the simple insouciance of two children at play, whose chosen playground would normally bring to mind gravity and solemnity.

A second video on show is titled Jadid, Arabic for “new,” (or the Hebrew Hadash of the exhibition’s title). The name is taken from Al Jadid, a port city on the Moroccan shore where these images were taken. Local youngsters play at dive jumping from fortified walls, jumping one by one in succession for hours on end.

Their jumps, several meters high, are risky, yet they brave the danger and perform them with blind innocence. As we watch them hurl themselves one by one into the void, we are overcome by mixed feelings of joy and fear boarding on euphoria. One would gladly join them if it hadn’t been for the caution and diminishing courage that comes with age.
Vendredi 11 août 1989 consists of eight paragraph outtakes cut in vinyl letters. Originally stuck on the wall, they have later been removed, giving visitors the impression that they have entered the exhibition shortly after being dismounted, with its residues still lying on the floor.

Except for a few clusters of words here and there, it is nearly impossible to make out their meaning, and their significance can only be conjectured.

The text was written by the artist at the age of 14, and is highly characteristic of a guarded youth, with its dreams of love and peace. It is a form of statement, an engagement that could have come from just about any boy or girl of that age, riddled as it is with misspellings, swerves and inconsistencies. It is full of a naively idealist sentiment that is both endearing and pathetic to read.

The text’s destruction marks a time elapsed, a page turned; that upon which one declares their intention to change the world. But it is also a time of greater innocence and reserve, where words still leave room for silence.

SAVE THE DATE - miart - fiera internazionale d’arte moderna e contemporanea

#miart2015,

David Hocney a New York

Pace Gallery is pleased to announce Some New Painting (and Photography), David Hockney’s first exhibition of new paintings since 2009. Following The Arrival of Spring, it is Pace’s second presentation of Hockney’s work this year. The exhibition will be on view at 508 West 25th Street from November 8, 2014, through January 10, 2015. To accompany the exhibition, Pace will publish a catalogue featuring a new essay by critic Martin Gayford, author of A Bigger Message: Conversations with David Hockney (Thames & Hudson, 2011).

Some New Painting (and Photography) is Hockney’s first exhibition of works completed since his return to Los Angeles from England, where he spent a decade pictorially exploring the East Yorkshire landscape of his youth.

The works in the exhibition demonstrate Hockney’s longstanding dedication to painting and to depicting the human figure. Hockney made all of these works in his Los Angeles studio using live models—friends, colleagues and dancers. The exhibition includes seated portraits of individuals, a series of paintings that recalls Matisse’s masterpiece Dance and paintings of figures posing in his studio. Hockney moved his figures and objects around the studio. Playing with time and space, some figures appear more than once in the same painting.

The paintings highlight enduring interests and motifs in Hockney’s work: art history, pictorial space and portraiture. Martin Gayford wrote these paintings create a new kind of pictorial space: “Each figure contains within it multiple points of view, and so does the picture as a whole. Consequently, the viewer in turn feels in a different relation to every person in the picture, and the whole painting feels very different to one that contains just one angle of vision.”

The exhibition also includes five photographic drawings exhibited on high-definition screens. The works juxtapose elements he has drawn with photographs taken during sessions painting groups in his studio. Following his recent iPad drawings and video works, the photographic drawings continue Hockney’s use of technology to produce images.

Although each figure depicts someone specific, Hockney is less interested in representation or documentation. Rather he is interested in advancing his study of pictorial space and perspective. Art historian Kay Heymer wrote, “Hockney treats the people in his pictures as actors in a scheme reaching beyond biographical or psychological narration. He is on a continuous journey, his art testifying to what he has seen.”

David Hockney (b. 1937, Bradford, England) has produced some of the most iconic artworks of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Hockney’s ambitious and multifaceted approach to art has led him to embrace a range of methods and technologies, yet his work always remains rooted in and connected to painting. “I’m quite convinced painting can’t disappear because there’s nothing to replace it,” Hockney said. His forays into other media have continued, yet his work since 2005 has accounted for what Lawrence Weschler has called “the fiercest, most joyous, most sustained, and most prolific bout of painting of his entire career.”

Hockney received the gold medal for his last year at London’s Royal College of Art in 1962, the first of numerous accolades accrued in his career. Hockney had his first solo show at the age of 26. In 1970 Whitechapel Gallery, London, organized a travelling one-artist exhibition that was the first of several major museum shows worldwide. In 2012 Hockney was appointed a member of the Order of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II.

His paintings of the town of Bridlington were first shown at the Kunsthalle Würth in David Hockney: Just Nature (2009) and later that year at Pace in David Hockney: Paintings 2006 – 2009, the artist’s first New York exhibition of new work in twelve years. More recently, the Royal Academy of Art, London presented David Hockney: A Bigger Picture, a sweeping retrospective that traveled to the Guggenheim Bilbao and Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2012–13). In 2013, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art presented two exhibitions of the artist’s multichannel videos, and the de Young Museum, San Francisco, mounted David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition, which included work from The Arrival of Spring, Pace’s 2014 exhibition of his videos and iPad drawings.

Hockney lives and works between Los Angeles and Yorkshire. This is his third exhibition with Pace.

Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset Short Cut, 2003

english text below

Palazzo Reale, Milano
25 agosto - 15 novembre 2015

The Great Mother
curated by Massimiliano Gioni

An exhibition promoted by the Cultural Office of the City of Milan, conceived and produced by the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi in partnership with Palazzo Reale for Expo in Città 2015

Palazzo Reale, Milan
August 25 – November 15, 2015

The Cultural Office of the City of Milan and the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi are pleased to announce The Great Mother, an exhibition promoted by the Cultural Office of the City of Milan, conceived and produced by the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi in partnership withPalazzo Reale for Expo in Città 2015, and supported by BNL BNP Paribas Group as main sponsor.

The exhibition, which will be open to the public from August 25 to November 15, 2015, is a collaboration between the public and private sectors to bring contemporary art into Palazzo Reale, the city’s most prestigious exhibition venue, as the pivotal event on the Expo in Città calendar for the second half of Expo 2015 in Milan.

Through the work of more than eighty international artists, the exhibition The Great Mother will analyze the iconography of motherhood in the art and visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, from early avant-garde movements to the present.

Whether as a symbol of creativity or as a metaphor for art itself, the archetype of the mother has been a central figure in the history of art, from the Venuses of the Stone Age to the "bad girls" of the postfeminist era and through centuries of religious works depicting innumerable maternity scenes. The more familiar version of “Mamma” has also become a stereotype closely tied to the image of Italy.

In undertaking an analysis of the representation of motherhood, the exhibition The Great Mother will trace a history of women's empowerment, chronicling gender struggles, sexual politics, and clashes between tradition and emancipation.

“The Expo in Città calendar will be made even richer by a prestigious exhibition – housed in one of Italy’s most popular exhibition venues, Palazzo Reale – which offers a sweeping panorama of the history and languages of art through the keen and challenging vision of Massimiliano Gioni, Artistic Director of the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi,” says Filippo Del Corno, the city’s Councilor for Culture. “Not only will this project offer the public the chance to take an extraordinary journey through Italian and international art history and culture, it will be a special opportunity to explore the figure of the mother, the quintessential symbol of nourishment, which is the key theme of Expo 2015. This achievement is made possible by the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi as part of a broader dialogue between the public and private sector, which are joining forces to help spread art and culture.”

With an exhibition layout that will cover more than 2000 square meters (20,000 square feet) on the piano nobile of Palazzo Reale – a neoclassical building which preserves many of its original decorations and period details – The Great Mother will bring contemporary art into the heart of the Expo in Città program, linking art history to the most pressing issues of our time. True to the mission of the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, which has been producing and promoting contemporary art projects in historical venues for over a decade, The Great Mother will mix past and present: the exhibition will juxtapose contemporary art, historical works, and artifacts from the world of film and literature, weaving a rich tapestry of associations and images.

“For twelve years now, the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi has brought the finest contemporary art into some of Milan’s most beautiful spaces, rediscovering and opening them up to the public,” said Fondazione Nicola Trussardi President Beatrice Trussardi. “For the Expo, we are pleased to be undertaking this new partnership with the City of Milan and with one of its greatest landmarks,Palazzo Reale, confirming our commitment to help fuel the debate on contemporary art and culture.”
