In questo periodo fra i tanti siti quello della Tate è ricchissimo di proposte e opere d'arte che vengono condivise con i  visitatori virtuali, utilissimo per un pratico ripasso dell'arte di questo ultimo secolo. 

Olafur Eliasson: In real life

Torna alla Tate Modern Olafur Eliasson, dopo oltre dieci anni dal grande successo dell’intervento nella Turbine Hall che lo rese famoso in tutto il mondo. Un lavoro ambientale che non verrà ripetuto, giustamente, ma che sarà proposto in documentazione.

La mostra infatti sarà un’antologica presso il Blavatnik Building, ideato degli architetti Herzog & de Meuron, e si svolgerà dal 11 Luglio al 5 Gennaio 2020.

Fra i tanti lavori ci sarà anche il particolare “tunnel luminoso” Your Blind Passenger ideato nel 2010 che sarà proposto in questa occasione.

Nel complesso l’artista danese è passato da un’attività artistica a un vero e proprio lavoro di studio progettuale che si articola in tantissime forme, continuando la forma artistica ma affiancandola anche da declinazioni design. Senza dimenticare anche altri percorsi come quello funzionale e sociale.

L’attività artistica si infiltrerà anche negli spazi della Tate, dove il Terrace Bar offrirà un menu ispirato alle famigerate colazioni di lavoro di Eliasson, portando nel museo piatti biologici e sostenibili.

Charlotte Prodger vince il Turner Prize 2018

E' l'artista Charlotte Prodger ha vincere l'edizione annuale del Turner Prize, ben 25.000 sterline. 

L'opera selezionata è un delicato film realizzato con un cellulare, sul lento vivere quotidiano. 

L'artista è stata selezionata per il prossimo padiglione scozzese alla Biennale di Venezia 2019.

Charlotte Prodger works with moving image, printed image, sculpture and writing. Her work explores issues surrounding queer identity, landscape, language, technology and time. She has been selected to represent Scotland during the 58th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia. Commissioned and curated by Linsey Young with Cove Park, Prodger's presentation will feature a major solo exhibition of new work.

Charlotte Prodger was awarded the Turner Prize during an event Tate Britain this evening. The £25,000 prize was presented by author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie during a live broadcast on the BBC, the broadcast partner for the prize. A further £5,000 is awarded to each of the other shortlisted artists.

The jury applauded the way that all four nominated artists are committed to making a difference to the world today and are very proud of the timely and urgent nature of the Turner Prize 2018 shortlist. They awarded the prize to Charlotte Prodger for her solo exhibition BRIDGIT / Stoneymollen Trail at Bergen Kunsthall. Using a smartphone, Prodger interweaves bodies, thoughts and landscape in her work. The jury admired the painterly quality of BRIDGIT and the attention it pays to art history. The work meanders through disparate associations ranging from JD Sports and standing stones to 1970s lesbian separatism and Jimi Hendrix’s sound recordist. They praised the way Prodger explores lived experience as mediated through technologies and histories.

One of the best known prizes for the visual arts in the world, the Turner Prize aims to promote public debate around new developments in contemporary British art. The Prize, established in 1984 by the Patrons of New Art, is awarded to a British artist for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding 26 April 2018. The shortlisted artists for 2018 were: Forensic Architecture, Naeem Mohaiemen, Charlotte Prodger and Luke Willis Thompson.

The members of the Turner Prize 2018 jury are Oliver Basciano, art critic and International Editor at ArtReview; Elena Filipovic, Director of Kunsthalle Basel; Lisa Le Feuvre, Executive Director of Holt-Smithson Foundation; and Tom McCarthy, novelist and Visiting Professor, Royal College of Art. The Chair of the jury is Alex Farquharson, Director, Tate Britain.

An exhibition of the four shortlisted artists is at Tate Britain until 6 January 2019.

Charlotte Prodger is 44 and lives and works in Glasgow. 

Her major new single channel film commission for Scotland + Venice will be presented at Arsenale Docks, S. Pietro di Castello, 40, 30122. The 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia runs from 11 May to 24 November 2019.

Londra art week

L’autunno londinese inizia da alcuni anni con la grande proposta di Frieze che con le sue due fiere d’arte attira il mondano mondo dell’arte contemporanea questa settimana. 

Quest’anno la declinazione dell’evento prosegue con uno sguardo al mondo dell’arte femminile, che sempre di più sta diventando centrale e propositivo, quest’anno l'iniziativa e raccolta sotto il titolo "Social Work".  Ci sono poi le affermate sezioni di Frieze Projects, Frieze Artist Award, Frieze Live, Frieze Films e Music, e gli stimolanti Frieze Talks.

Frieze Art Fair e Frieze Masters come sempre si svolgono presso Regent's Park dove c’è  già anche il bel progetto delle sculture proposte da alcune settimane.

A corredo di questo evento centrale c’è poi le diverse proposte come il progetto della Hyundai Commission alla Tate Modern e tantissimi mostre tra cui segnaliamo la mostra “All Too Human: Bacon, Freud and a Century of Painting Life” alla Tate Britain o la selezione di capolavori della Collezione Iannaccone proposti alla Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art.

Parallelamente ci sono poi le fiere alternative come 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair o Moniker Art Fair.

10 day and 6 nights

10 giorni 6 notti, un progetto ideato dalla Tate Modern con la BMW in cui si incontra tecnologia e arte, questa iniziativa si svolgerà dal 24 Marzo al 2 Aprile, miscelando performance, azioni multimediali. Si inizia, nei suggestivi spazi dei Thnks con la scultura “nebbia” dell’artista Fujiko Nakaya.

Ten Inspiring Days

Situated in the Tanks, the first BMW Tate Live Exhibition brings together an intergenerational selection of artists that have been invited to stage their work as a space that extends a form of hospitality or community, to other artists and visitors alike. The artists create images of networks and forms of participation that link natural environment with social media, organic and technological, human and non-human. 

Isabel Lewis is in residence throughout the duration of the exhibition hosting a number of her signature occasions, combining music, food, drink and perfume to create an alternative environment for dance, discussions and invited musicians.

CAMP, a collaborative studio founded in Mumbai in 2007, use the Transformer Galleries as a space to share a selection of rarely-seen installations from the past 15 years that rework everyday circuits of electricity.

Wu Tsang and Fred Moten present Gravitational Feel, a sculptural performance using fabric and sound to explore the social and physical significance of touch and voice. Installations by Carlos Casas, Phill Niblock, and Lorenzo Senni exist as site-specific environments open to the public by day.

Fujiko Nakaya will transform the South Terrace for the first time with an immersive fog sculpture, animated by a light and soundscape made in collaboration with Nakaya’s historic collaborators: Ryuichi Sakamoto and Shiro Takatani; and host performances by renowned dancer and choreographer Min Tanaka.

The daytime installations act as springboards for six nights of ticketed live performances. You can browse the full programme for each night below and book tickets online. The live nights will showcase both established and emerging artists working across performance, film, sound and dance.

Performance at Tate: Into the Space of Art maps the previously little known history of Tate’s engagement with performance over the last 50 years.

In the 1960s performance was seen as fundamentally different from the sort of art that could be collected or shown within art museums. It was live, and its ephemerality challenged entrenched notions of art based on artistic skill, medium specificity and market value. But today performance has come to be seen as part of a set of strategies available to contemporary artists, one that is not inherently different from other art forms and not at all beyond the bounds of what a museum can and should present to its publics. Performance—as live actions and repeated, captured and collected iterations—has become a major acquisition and display priority for Tate and other art museums around the world.

To map and investigate this shift in the place of performance in relation to art museums Tate launched in 2014 a two-year major research project in partnership with the University of Exeter with the support of the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The project set out to trace the evolving nature of performance practices since the 1960s, as seen through Tate’s own history.

Now published on Tate’s website, Performance at Tate: Into the Space of Art is a multi-layered exploration of the place of performance art and performativity in the museum. The lead essay by Jonah Westerman argues against seeing performance as a medium or genre and urges that it should be understood instead as an interrelated set of questions about how art relates to its audiences and the wider social world. The publication also provides many detailed case studies of individual art works and events, together with an interactive timeline. Bringing together previously little known audio, films and videos, photographs, and museum documents drawn from Tate’s Archive, the project reveals the richness and depth of the gallery’s engagement with performance over five decades, offering new insights into the museum’s role in framing and interpreting performance.

Liberate la Tate ...

Domenica scorsa si è svolta nella grande hall della Tate un'azione performantiva non autorizzata del gruppo Liberate Tate per protestare sulla sponsorizzazione della BP al gruppo Tate.

Come sempre si tratta di una riflessione sulla promozione e su chi promuove; quanto sia coerente e come sia giusto parlare di certi temi. 

Richard Tuttle fra la Tate e la Whitechapel

Dal prossimo 14 Ottobre si svolge presso la  Whitechapel Gallery la più grande indagine espositiva mai realizzata nel Regno Unito sul celebre scultore e poeta americano Richard Tuttle, questo progetto unico si concentra sulla particolare importanza sull'uso del materiale tessile nel lavoro dell'artista. 

Richard Tuttle è venuto alla ribalta negli anni '60, egli unisce nel suo lavoro la scultura, la pittura, la poesia e il disegno.  

Parallelamente torna dal 14 Ottobre l'uso della Turbine Hall della Tate Modern che aveva ospitato alcune delle opere più sorprendenti e memorabili del mondo dell'arte contemporanea.

Ora, questo vasto spazio accoglie la più grande opera mai realizzata dal famoso scultore americano Richard Tuttle (nato nel 1941). 

Intitolato "Io non lo so Oppure la trama del tessile lingua", questa scultura, commissionata di recente, unisce una particolare onda di tessuti, disegnati dall'artista, dai colori audaci e brillanti. 

La commissione è parte di un'indagine più ampia dell'artista che si svolge a Londra il prossimo autunno e che comprende una grande mostra alla Whitechapel Gallery di rilevamento cinque decenni di carriera di Tuttle e una nuova pubblicazione sontuoso radicata nella propria collezione dell'artista di tessuti storici e contemporanei.

At Whitechapel, the UK’s largest ever survey of the renowned American sculptor and poet Richard Tuttle, this unique project focuses on the particular importance of textiles within the artist’s work.

Richard Tuttle (b 1941) came to prominence in the 1960s, combining sculpture, painting, poetry and drawing. He has become revered for his delicate and playful approach, often using such humble, everyday materials as cloth, paper, rope and plywood. For this project, Tuttle has taken as his starting point one of the unsung heroes of everyday life: textiles.

Textiles are commonly associated with craft and fashion, yet woven canvas lies behind many of the world’s most acclaimed works of art and textiles are of increasing interest to artists today. I Don't Know or The Weave of Textile Language. investigates the importance of this material throughout history, across Tuttle’s remarkable body of work and into the latest developments in his practice.

Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall has played host to some of the world’s most striking and memorable works of contemporary art. Now, this vast space welcomes the largest work ever created by renowned American sculptor Richard Tuttle (b 1941).

Entitled I Don’t Know Or The Weave of Textile Language., this newly commissioned sculpture combines vast sways of fabrics designed by the artist from both man-made and natural fibres in three bold and brilliant colours.

The commission is part of a wider survey of the artist taking place in London this autumn and comprising a major exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery surveying five decades of Tuttle’s career and a sumptuous new publication rooted in the artist’s own collection of historic and contemporary textiles.

Choreographers Selma and Sofiane Ouissi and artist Alexandra Bachzetsis present two new online performance commissions for the BMW Tate Live Performance Room on 18 September and 23 October 2014. Selma and Sofiane Ouissi will respond to each other’s movements. They will be located in separate countries and united by Skype in one performance. Alexandra Bachzetsis will explore how physical gestures can represent and create identity. BMW Tate Live Performance Room is a pioneering programme of live performances commissioned exclusively for online viewing and simultaneously seen by international audiences across world time zones via Tate’s Youtube channelwww.youtube.com/user/tate/tatelive. BMW Tate Live is a longterm partnership between BMW and Tate, which focuses on performance, interdisciplinary art and curating digital space. 

Brother and sister Selma and Sofiane Ouissi, both major figures of contemporary dance in the Arab world, used Skype in their work “Here(s) 2011–2012” in order to dance together while located in different cities. Through their live link-up the two artists responded to each others onscreen movements. For BMW Tate Live Performance Room they will draw on their history of online collaboration. Selma will be in Paris and Sofiane in London and they will use Skype to interact. For this performance they are joined by digital artist Yacine Sebti who will create additional visual imagery. The performance is broadcast live on Tate’s Youtube channel on 18 September 2014, 20.00 GMT.

The Ouissis have danced together throughout their careers. Collaborating with directors and renowned choreographers including Fadhel Jaziri, the company Michèle Anne de Mey, the duo have performed worldwide in venues such as Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels or Tanzquartier in Vienna. 

Award-winning artist and choreographer Alexandra Bachzetsis’s work “From A to B via C” examines the impact of borrowed and learned physical habits. The performance moves through imaginary places and events from a ballet classroom to an online dance tutorial, exploring how our bodies incorporate skills, translate movements and inform our identities. The work, involving three dancers, was originally created for a theatre and then transformed for a live performance in an exhibition space. The performance on 23 October 2014, 20.00 GMT, sees the work transformed again for the online audience.

Bachzetsis lives and works between Basel and Zurich. She began her career as a dancer and has been working independently, producing and presenting her own work in theatres and contemporary art venues since 2003. Her newest performance “The Stages of Staging” was presented at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in 2013. 

The innovative format of Performance Room offers international audiences an opportunity to experience entirely new works live and to join a discussion about the work online. The global online audience are encouraged to chat with other viewers via social media channels during the performance and to put questions to the artist or curator for the live Q&A by following @TateLive; using #BMWTateLive; Tate Facebook; or Tate Google+. Each online performance is archived and available to view online after the live event.

Tate Hunday

Torneranno i grandi progetti nella Turbine Hall, attualmente in ristrutturazione per la connessione con il nuovo edificio di ampliamento della Tate Modern. Cambia il sostegno economico che passa dal gruppo Unilever alla Hyundai che garantirà il sostegno fino al 2025. Con questa iniziativa sono anche state acquisite alcune opere dell’artista coreano Nam June Paik.

Tate and Hyundai Motor today announced a major new long-term partnership. Confirmed until 2025, this 11-year partnership is the longest initial commitment from a corporate sponsor in Tate’s history. Hyundai’s support will allow Tate Modern to realise The Hyundai Commission, a new series of site-specific installations by contemporary artists in the iconic Turbine Hall, beginning in autumn 2015.

Since Tate Modern opened in 2000, the Turbine Hall has hosted some of the world’s most memorable and acclaimed works of contemporary art, reaching an audience of millions each year. The way artists have interpreted this vast industrial space has revolutionised public perceptions of contemporary art in the twenty-first century. The annual Hyundai Commission will give artists an opportunity to create new work for this unique context.

This partnership is founded upon Tate and Hyundai’s shared commitment to worldwide innovation. Tate Modern’s programme has become increasingly diverse and international, offering a major platform for art from Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa including film and live art.

Tate’s activities outside the UK also continue to grow, including travelling exhibitions, international loans from its collection, research centres and conferences investigating art from around the world.

To mark the start of this new partnership, Hyundai has joined forces with Tate’s Asia Pacific Acquisitions Committee to support a major acquisition for Tate’s collection, dramatically improving the museum’s holdings of art from Asia. The acquisition consists of nine key works by the renowned South Korean artist Nam June Paik (1932–2006). Often considered the founder of video art, Paik explored humanity’s ever-changing relationship with technology, from radio and television to robotics and computing. A major retrospective was presented at Tate Liverpool in 2010 and this acquisition is the first time the artist’s work has entered Tate’s collection. These nine works span 40 years of his pioneering career and will go on display at Tate Modern later this year.

Today’s announcement coincides with the completion of a newly-built bridge across the top of the Turbine Hall. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, this bridge joins the existing galleries on level 4 of Tate Modern to the new building being developed to the south. Opening to the public in 2016, this project will transform Tate Modern with the Turbine Hall at its heart, offering in due course dramatic new views on The Hyundai Commission.

L'arte di distruggere tutto - Antologia sull'iconclastia in Gran Bretagna

Nonostante il grande lavoro di rinnovamento la Tate Britain prosegue la sua attività espositiva con una interessante mostra sull’iconoclastia in Gran Bretagna.

Un bel progetto espositivo che in chiave storica ci fa percorrere alcune famose tappe del difficile rapporto fra la creatività e le passioni umane, soprattutto quando queste sono esposte al pubblico e spesso soggette al suo volere.

Tutta la storia ci insegna che sono soprattutto le grandi emozioni come quelle religiose e politiche a trasformare i destino di un’opera pubblica d’arte. La declinazione storica della mostra "Arte sotto attacco : Storie di iconoclastia britannico " è un’analisi variegata su uno questo aspetto meno studiati della storia, quando le opere non sono amate e vengono danneggiate o distrutte.

In un rapido percorso storico si percepisce quanto sia delicato l’equilibrio fra la passione e l’odio e di come esso possa essere intenso.

Anche solo recentemente, come è successo con l’opera di Rothko alla Tate Modern, l’arte è continuamente soggetta ad azioni di violenza, gesti rapidi e spesso irreversibili.

Ma tutta la storia è in continuo altalenarsi fra accettazione e rifiuto, tanto più quando le opere sono accessibili a chiunque. Come la Colonna di Nelson che fu fatta saltare in aria a Dublino nel 1966 nella lotta per l’indipendenza irlandese. Ma a volte l’arte stessa gioca con le opere del passato trasformandole in nuovi manufatti, si pensi a Jake e Dinos Chapman che hanno usato le antiche stampe di Goya per realizzare dei nuovi lavori o che dire di Robert Rauschenberg che cancella un disegno Wilhelm de Kooning.

L’arte è un simbolo, per cui col cambiare delle culture e dei poteri, muta la sua fascinazione, a volte giustamente fino all’odio. Pensiamo che solo il 10 per cento dell’arte medioevale inglese è giunta a noi. Dato che ci fa rendere conto della grande distruzione che è avvenuto nel passato, in questo caso soprattutto dovuto alle pressioni religiose.

Si attraversano i secoli e gli umori sociali non mutano poi tanto, si giunge così alle espressioni più contemporanee che spesso si trovano in contrasto con il gusto più diffuso, ultimo esempio evidente il famoso galletto di Katherine Frish esposto in Trafalgar Square, soggetto alle recenti critiche di una vasto pubblico. La mostra cerca così di stimolarci su questo aspetto della cultura sociale, in modo abbastanza variegato e stimolante.

Segnalo al piano superiore la piccola ma molto interessante esposizione sull’opera “L’età dell’innocenza” di Gaisbourg uno dei suoi lavori più noti. La mostra indaga, a seguito del recente restauro, alcuni dettagli creativi e tecnici.

La magia del coloro, grande retrospettiva su Paul Klee alla Tate Modern

Un mondo composto dalla delicatezza dei colori e delle forme, un alfabeto di segni ricercato, delle sensazione di leggerezza e gioia; sono tutte particolari stati d'animo che si percepiscono guardando molti dei quadri di Paul Klee, artista geniale e unico.

Il suo lavoro artistico è un composito universo che si discosta dalle tante correnti artistiche dei suoi tempi, sviluppatosi in un’atmosfera speciale, formatasi dal paziente lavoro dell’artista, che in questi ultimi decenni è diventato molto popolare. 

Dal 16 Ottobre si presenterà un’occasione stupenda per poter ripercorrere questo percorso creativo in una vasta esposizione alla Tate Modern di Londra che gli dedica una grande mostra dal titolo “The EY Exhibition: Paul Klee”. 

  

Preceduta da una ampia azione di analisi e indagine, avviata per questo evento, che metterà in risalto il grande lavoro di sperimentazione e unicità dell’artista, ideatore di una sensibilità estetica innovativa ed emozionante.

Tantissimi lavori, disegni, quadri, corredati da materiale documentativo e storico, in una mostra che abbraccia non solo l’universo visivo ma declinavano nel mondo del design e della musica, da lui sempre molto amata, infatti era anche un buon suonare di violino. 

Il suo era un approccio nato da basi scientifiche trasformate nella sua poetica creativa in esercizi di fantasia e incredibile immaginazione, che ha aperto nuove strade alle forme e all’uso dei colori. 

La mostra prende le mosse dalle sue prime attività artistiche sviluppandosi fino alla grande esperienza del Bauhaus, quando con altri grandi artisti del secolo scorso, quali Kandinsky, diede vita ad una delle più interessanti esperienze creative del novecento.

L'arte che protesta, ultimo caso ieri alla Tate ricordando la BP e il Golfo del Messico

Situazione imbarazzante quando ieri alla Tate Modern un gruppo di artisti è giunto negli spazi delle Turbine, realizzando una performance critica sulla  sponsorizzata dalla BP, protesta in ricordo del terzo anniversario dell'inquinamento del Golfo del Messico. 

Come già con San Pietroburgo, città sempre più razzista, che ospiterà Manifesta o in certi paesi medio orientali l'arte viene usata per riciclare immagini negative, per fortuna che ci sono ancora artisti disposti a mettersi in gioco e non lasciarsi condizionare dagli sponsor.

Tate 2014

La Tate ha annunciato per i suoi diversi spazi il programma del 2014, che come sempre si focalizza sulla cultura inglese ma non solo. Ci saranno quindi alcune grandi mostre su Henri Matisse, una grande retrospettiva alla Tate Modern, a cui seguiranno delle mostre su Richard Hamilton, Kazimir Malevich e in autunno Sigmar Polke. Piet Mondrian sarà alla Tate Liverpool. Alla Tate Britan un omaggio a JMW Turner, seguito poi a mostre su Richard Deacon e  Phyllida Barlow.

Mi incuriosisce poi il progetto sulla British Folk Art, che analizzerà tutta una forma creativa fuori dalle regole canoniche dell'arte, ma che ha influenzato molti artisti.

Simon Starling per la Tate Commision

Da pochi giorni la Tate Britan ha presentato l'ultimo lavoro di Simon Starling dal titolo "Phantom Ride" commissionato in analisi alla collezione del museo stesso.  Si tratta di un video che riprende alcune opere, ambientate in un'atmosfera rarefatta.

Glam! alla Tate Liverpool

Mentre il V&A Museum a Londra indaga l'immagine artistica di David Bowie, noto cantante pop/rock, alla Tate Liverpool si indaga le immagini e lo stile Glam di quel periodo, pare proprio che il revival degli anni settanta sia attualissimo. 

Il Glam, fu uno stile pop stravagante esploso in tutta la Gran Bretagna durante gli anni 1971-5. 

Sostenuto dalle forti emozionanti culturali succedute alla rivolte giovanili ha dato spazio ad un universo di suoni futuristici, mode stravaganti e glitterate.

Glam! La Performance di stile è la prima mostra che indaga questo stile attraverso i diversi canali espressivi, dall'arte alla pubblicità, passando per la moda e il cinema. 

Particolarmente innovativo un uso dell'identità esagerata, androgenia, un mix fra erotismo e il dandismo che vide personaggi quali David Hockney, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Allen Jones, Richard Hamilton, Peter Hujar. La mostra comprende anche un nuovo adattamento del famoso show di Marc Camille Chaimowicz artefice di ambientazioni sceniche molto glam. 

Elizabeth Price vince il Turner Prize

Su Channel4 Jude Law ha consegnato il Turner Prize 2012 all’artista Elizabeth Price, vinto con l’opera “The Woolworths Choir of 1979” video su un incendio (opera realizzata in un negozio di Manchester dove morirono 10 persone).

Tate shopping a Frieze

Come tutti gli anni la Tate coglie l’occasione della fiera Frieze per fare alcuni acquisti di opere d’arte, quest'anno spendendo 240.000 sterline, realizzate da giovani artisti emergenti e non, quest’anno sono stati selezionati i lavori
