Inside China al Palais de Tokyo

Un grande progetto di analisi della più recente arte cinese in una partnership fra il Palais de Tokyo di Parigi e la KAF.

K11 Art Foundation (KAF) and PALAIS DE TOKYO will present their first co-produced exhibition in Paris to open on October 20th 2014. “Inside China” is part of an extensive three-year partnership between the two institutions designed to encourage cross-cultural exchange and bring the most exciting art from China to the international stage. Set to open during FIAC Week, the exhibition will remain on display in Paris through January 2015, before travelling to China.

Co-curated by Jo-ey Tang from the Palais de Tokyo and KAF appointed Wang Chunchen of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Beijing, “Inside China,” will feature young contemporary Chinese artists in dialogue with artists from France. In their entirety they represent a new wave of creators whose work negotiates the over-production, monumentality and rapid development which they witness in their surroundings, often embedding these challenges into their own systems of production.

Adrian Cheng, Founder and Chairman of KAF, said: “This exhibition is truly the first of its kind – an adventurous foray seeking to open up a new dialogue and encourage cross-fertilisation between contemporary Chinese and French artists. We hope “Inside China” will bring creative talent from Greater China to the forefront and enrich the understanding of art from China amongst international audiences. There is a new generation of contemporary Chinese artists who have an unprecedented access to information and exposure to global influences. Their work does not merely focus on China and its history, like many of their predecessors did, but exemplifies a global vision behind which, at the same time, often lays a local story and questions of identity and heritage, creating a new voice and new generation of identity for China.”

The exhibition takes its cue from the 19th French photographer, caricaturist and novelist Nadar (1820-1910), whose pioneering aerial photography helped usher in a new era of perception.
The new generation of artists on display include Berlin-based Renaud Jerey (b.1982), best known for creating avatars making use of discarded elements such as PVC tubing, paint, latex gloves and sports clothing, to reveal mechanisms of pollution and consumption; Chinese artist Li Gang (b.1986), whose work often draws on elements of traditional craftsmanship in response to the pace of change in his native Dali in the Yunman province;  Edwin Lo (b.1984), who has created a three-month long score for the exhibition, made up of sounds recorded from a tanker that supplies oil to the industrial city of Doumen in southern China; Aude Pariset (b. 1983), whose installations bring to bear the absence of authentic experience in the fictionalized realm of the “lifestyle” industry; Wu Hao (b. 1985), whose multi-layered works function as a record and document of time compressed; the process-orientated works of Yu Ji (b.1985), which are shaped by her particular sense of temporality; and Zhao Yao (b.1981), who often incorporates images of collective protest movements in his work as part of his investigation into how language and ideology can trigger action and conflict.

“Inside China” is the first of a series of co-curated touring exhibitions organized by KAF and PALAIS DE TOKYO, as part of a three-year strategic agreement which will feature a varied exhibitions programme, curatorial exchanges and educational and outreach initiatives.

“Inside China” is also one of the programme highlights celebrating the 50th anniversary of Franco-Sino diplomatic relations, following “Metamorphosis of the Virtual 5 + 5” at K11 Art Space in Shanghai, and the “Master of Impressionism-Claude Monet” exhibition, which recently closed with resounding success in Shanghai at K11 Art Space.
