Lunedì 15 giugno 2020 alle ore 18.00, dopo la lunga pausa causata dal Covid 19, Quartz Studio ha il piacere di presentare Three Ball Total Equilibrium Tank and other problems, un'edizione di Jonathan Monk (Leicester, UK, 1969) concepita appositamente per lo spazio no profit torinese. Il progetto di quest'edizione, dopo quella del Poster (Manifesto) realizzata in collaborazione con Maurizio Nannucci nel 2014, era rimasto in sospeso dopo la mostra Cool Your Jets (2016), frutto del dialogo tra Liam Gillick e Jonathan Monk, attorno ai temi del calcio e dell'economia. Ora l'idea, con i tempi dilatati dall'emergenza sanitaria, finalmente prende forma a sostegno di Quartz con la realizzazione di 10 edizioni (+1 AP). Per l'occasione sono state prodotte tre installazioni, ciascuna composta da sette cementine esagonali che riprendono i colori delle cementine originali del pavimento di Quartz e tre palloni realizzati in Germania nel 2016, grazie alla consulenza tecnica di Giulia Mainetti dello studio Altofragile di Milano. Il progetto originale per la mostra Cool your Jets - scrive il critico Marco Scotti - nasceva da un dialogo tra Jonathan Monk e Liam Gillick, in cui alle domande poste dal secondo su temi legati alla sociologia contemporanea, il primo rispondeva con citazioni dal mondo del calcio. Nei continui incroci di Jonathan Monk tra arte concettuale e dimensione autobiografica, questo sport torna regolarmente, a partire dal suo amato Leicester City Football Club. Tra i dati e le memorie personali dell’artista troviamo così le azioni modificate tramite ritagli di The little things make all the difference, foto di azioni leggermente modificate cambiando la posizione della palla, Keep Stills, dove lettere trasferibili sono sovrapposte a vecchie fotografie – a volte di giocatori - per comporre frasi di On Kawara, oppure le mappe di Alighiero Boetti ripensate con le maglie da calcio al posto delle bandiere e le sculture di Sol LeWitt trasformate in funzionali porte da calcio.
Jonathan Monk (Leicester, UK, 1969) vive e lavora a Berlino. Nel 1991 si è laureato alla Glasgow School of Art. Nel suo lavoro adotta l’estetica e i metodi del concettualismo artistico degli anni Sessanta, permeando tuttavia la tradizione di umorismo, leggerezza ed elementi autobiografici. Mostre personali del suo lavoro sono state organizzate dal Centre for Contemporary Arts di Glasgow (1992 e 1994), dal Centre d’Art Contemporain di Neuchatel (1997), dal Museum Kunst Palast di Düsseldorf (2003), dall’Institute of Contemporary Art di Londra (2005), dal Kunstverein Hannover (2006), dal Palais de Tokyo + Musee d'Art Moderne di Parigi (2008) e dall'Artpace di San Antonio (2009). Il suo lavoro è stato incluso in mostre collettive come Taipei Biennial (2000), Berlin Biennale (2001), Biennale di Venezia (2003), Whitney Biennial (2006), Prague Biennale (2007) e Panama Biennale (2008). Jonathan Monk è rappresentato da Casey Kaplan, New York (USA); Lisson Gallery, Londra (UK); Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen (Denmark); Meyer Riegger, Karlsruhe/Berlino (Germania); Dvir Gallery, Tel Aviv, (Israele); Massimo Minini, Brescia (Italia).

On Monday, June 15, 2020 at 6:00 pm, after the long pause caused by Covid-19 pandemic, Quartz Studio is pleased to present Three Ball Total Equilibrium Tank and other problems, an edition by Jonathan Monk (Leicester, UK, 1969), purposely conceived for the Turin non-profit space. The project of this edition, following the one of Poster (Manifesto), realized in collaboration with Maurizio Nannucci in 2014, was pending since the exhibition Cool Your Jets (2016), resulting from a dialogue between Liam Gillick and Jonathan Monk on the topics of soccer and economy. Now, within the expanded time of the health emergency, that idea finally takes shape in order to support Quartz through the production of an edition of 10 (+1 AP). On the occasion, three installations have been produced. Each of them is composed by seven hexagonal cement tiles replicating the colors of the original Quartz floor cement tiles and three balls realized in Germany in 2016, thanks to the technical advice of Giulia Mainetti from Altofragile studio, Milan . The original project for the exhibition Cool Your Jets - writes the critic Marco Scotti – was born from a conversation between Jonathan Monk and Liam Gillick, in which to the questions posed by the latter related to themes of contemporary sociology, the former replied with quotations from the world of football. In Monk’s continuous interactions between conceptual art and autobiography, this sport regularly recurs, starting with his beloved Leicester City Football Club. Amidst the artist’s memories and works we find the collages The little things make all the difference, photos of actions during football matches slightly modified changing the position of the ball, Keep Stills, where letraset letters are superimposed over heads within old photographs - occasionally footballers - to compose phrases from On Kawara, or Alighiero Boetti’s world maps redesigned through football uniforms instead of national flags, and minimal sculptures by Sol LeWitt transformed into functional football goals.
Jonathan Monk (Leicester, UK, 1969) lives and works in Berlin. Monk received a BFA from Leicester Polytechnic in 1988 and an BFA from Glasgow School of Art in 1991. In his work, Monk adopts the esthetics and practices of 1960s Conceptualism, but infuses the tradition with humor, levity, and autobiographical elements. Solo exhibitions of his work have been organized by Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow (1992 and 1994), Centre d'Art Contemporain in Neuchatel (1997), Museum Kunst Palast in Dusseldorf (2003), Institute of Contemporary Art in London (2005), Kunstverein Hannover (2006), Palais de Tokyo + Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris (2008), and Artpace in San Antonio (2009).
