L'artista svedese Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) iniziò a creare dipinti radicalmente astratti, dal 1906 in poi, particolarmente audaci, colorati e senza legami a riferimenti riconoducibili al mondo fisico. Passarono diversi anni prima che Vasily Kandinskij, Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian e altri avrebbero compiuto passi simili per liberare le proprie opere d'arte dal contenuto rappresentativo. Klint raramente espose i suoi dipinti straordinariamente anticipatori e, convinto che il mondo non fosse pronto per loro, stabilì che non sarebbero stati mostrati per 20 anni dopo la sua morte. Hilma af Klint è nata a Stoccolma nel 1862 e ha continuato a studiare pittura presso la Royal Academy of Fine Arts della città, diplomandosi con lode nel 1887. Si è presto affermata come una rispettata pittrice a Stoccolma, esibendo abilmente dipinti figurativi e lavorando brevemente come segretario della Society for Swedish Women Artists. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum presents the first major solo exhibition in the United States of the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862–1944). When af Klint began creating radically abstract paintings in 1906, they were like little that had been seen before: bold, colorful, and untethered from recognizable references to the physical world. It was several years before Vasily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, and others would take similar strides to free their own artwork of representational content. Yet af Klint rarely exhibited her remarkably forward-looking paintings and, convinced the world was not ready for them, stipulated that they not be shown for 20 years following her death. Ultimately, her work was not exhibited until 1986, and it is only over the past three decades that her paintings and works on paper have received serious attention.
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum presents R. H. Quaytman: + x, Chapter 34, featuring a new group of paintings by contemporary artist R. H. Quaytman. This presentation is organized in tandem with Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future, the first exhibition devoted to Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) in the United States since Quaytman organized a survey of the Swedish artist’s work nearly thirty years ago at New York’s P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center. Quaytman’s new paintings engage af Klint’s work through visual quotations and conceptual references, offering a multifaceted examination of af Klint’s output and legacy. R. H. Quaytman: + x, Chapter 34 is the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in New York and features twenty-eight paintings on the sixth level of the Guggenheim Museum’s rotunda from October 12, 2018, through April 23, 2019.
