Frieze New York will return to Randall’s Island Park, Manhattan from May 14 to 17, 2015. For the fourth consecutive year, Frieze New York is sponsored by Deutsche Bank.
Housed within an innovative structural design and overlooking the East River, the fair will showcase the world’s most exciting contemporary galleries. This year sees the introduction of Spotlight, a new gallery section which will take place alongside the existing Frame and Focus sections. The fair also benefits from a celebrated non-profit program comprising Frieze Projects, Talks, Sounds and Education.
The World’s Leading Contemporary Art Galleries
The fourth edition of Frieze New York will bring together over 190 of the world’s leading contemporary galleries, with 63 participants from the fair’s host city. With a particularly strong showing of local galleries this year, those new to Frieze New York include: Acquavella (New York); Blum & Poe (New York/Los Angeles), Clearing (New York/Brussels), JTT (New York), Matthew Marks Gallery (New York); McKee Gallery (New York); Pace (New York) and Skarstedt (New York).
Solo and special presentations that promise to be focal points in the fair include: Philippe Parreno (Pilar Corrias, London); Lucio Fontana (CRG Gallery, New York); T.J. Wilcox (Gladstone Gallery, New York); Giuseppe Penone (Marian Goodman, New York); Lesley Vance (David Kordansky, Los Angeles); Richard Tuttle (Pace, New York); and Canan (Rampa, Istanbul); two-artist presentations by Marilyn Minter and Laurie Simmons (Salon 94, New York) and John McCracken and Franz West (David Zwirner, New York); and a new installation by Iran do Espírito Santo (Fortes Vilaca, São Paulo).
Spotlight, Frame and Focus
The 2015 fair introduces Spotlight, a new section for solo presentations of 20th-century art which has been a critically acclaimed feature at Frieze Masters in London. Advised by curator Adriano Pedrosa, Spotlight explores unexpected positions from established artists and presents new research into art from emerging territories, as well as significant work from overlooked artists. Rasheed Araeen (Aicon Gallery, New York), Lynn Hershman Leeson (Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco & Waldburger Wouters, Brussels), Howardena Pindell (Garth Greenan Gallery, New York), Carolee Schneemann (Hales, London) and Ibrahim El-Salahi (Vigo, London) are all included in the first New York edition of Spotlight.
Solo presentations by young galleries under eight years old, Frame features the most exciting emerging galleries from around the world. Additions to this year’s list include Antenna Space (Shanghai) showing Liu Ding; Freedman Fitzpatrick (Los Angeles) with Mathis Altmann; Mathew Gallery (Berlin) showing Than Hussein Clark; and Supplement (London) with Philomene Pirecki. Frame is advised by curators Raphael Gygax and Jacob Proctor.
A section for galleries founded after 2003, Focus brings curated projects specially conceived for Frieze NewYork and includes the most forward thinking galleries working today. A number of these galleries have previously been exhibitors in the Frame section of the fair, including Bureau (New York); Carlos/Ishikawa (London); and Real Fine Arts (New York), which further underlines the fair’s commitment to fostering a community of galleries throughout all stages of development. Galleries participating in Focus that are new to Frieze New York include: Chi-Wen Gallery (Taipei); Foxy Production (New York); Frutta (Rome); Hunt Kastner (Prague); Instituto De Visión (Bogotá), Silberkuppe (Berlin) and Travesia Cuatro (Guadalajara/Madrid).
Frieze Projects
The Frieze Projects program at Frieze New York is curated by Cecilia Alemani and will feature six new artworks, inside, outside and even underneath the fair on Randall’s Island. The artists participating this year are: Korakrit Arunanondchai, Pia Camil, Samara Golden, Aki Sasamoto and Allyson Vieira. The program will also feature a special tribute to the Flux-Labyrinth, an installation conceived in Berlin in 1976 by George Maciunas, in collaboration with other Fluxus artists. For this homage at Frieze New York, Amalia Pica, John Bock and the collective Gelitin will create new environments, which turn the experience of traversing the space into a joyful and surreal exercise.
Frieze Talks
Bringing together leading artists, writers and cultural commentators, Frieze Talks 2015 is programmed by Tom Eccles (Executive Director, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College) and Christy Lange (Associate Editor, frieze). This year’s participants include Paul McCarthy (artist), Thelma Golden (Director and Chief Curator, Studio Museum in Harlem, New York) and Jerry Saltz (Critic, New York Magazine), amongst many others. Frieze Talks takes place in the onsite auditorium at Frieze New York from Thursday, May 14 through Sunday, May 17. Access to Frieze Talks is included in all admission tickets.
Frieze Sounds
For its fourth edition Frieze Sounds will feature three commissioned audio works by international artists: Alicja Kwade, Xaviera Simmons and Sergei Tcherepnin. Frieze Sounds is programmed and curated by Cecilia Alemani and presented with BMW. The works will be at a listening station within the fair, and accessible at friezeprojectsny.org, available to download from May 14.
Frieze Education
The Education program at Frieze New York gives high school students and children from underserved communities across all five boroughs access to arts programs, with a combination of workshops and tours for school groups. Sponsored by Deutsche Bank for the third consecutive year, Frieze Education involves ‘Frieze Teen’ workshops with Julie Mehrutu, Urs Fischer, Triple Canopy, Cleopatra’s, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) and Material for the Arts (MFTA), plus a range of activities for public school groups from local areas visiting the fair.
Stand Prize
The most innovative gallery stand at the fair will receive a prize supported by Champagne Pommery. The prize of 15,000 USD will be judged by an international panel of curators: Carlos Basualdo (the Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art), Hamza Walker (Co-Curator, ‘Made in LA 2016’) and Ruba Katrib (Curator, SculptureCenter). The recipient of the Stand Prize will be presented with their award at 4pm on Wednesday May 13.
Non-Profits
To reflect its commitment to the diversity of the cultural life in New York, Frieze has also invited three alternative spaces in the city to present at the fair. New to Frieze New York in 2015 are Bidoun, a platform for new questions, images and ideas about the Middle East, and SculptureCenter, dedicated to experimental and innovative developments in contemporary sculpture; while White Columns, the city’s oldest alternative art space, will return for the second consecutive year.

Tickets to Frieze New York are on sale at friezenewyork.com. A limited number of 10 USD student and 17-25 tickets are also available, for the Thursday and Friday of the fair. Including new dining options and the return of many Frieze favorites, this year’s participating restaurants include: Court Street Grocers, Dimes, Frankies Spuntino, Marlow & Sons, Milk Bar, Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream, Parlor Coffee, Prime Meats and Roberta’s. This year, the VIP Room and restaurant at Frieze New York will be hosted by NeueHouse.

The yearbook for Frieze New York 2015 is now available. In this fully illustrated publication, leading critics profile over 190 emerging and established international artists, each chosen by the galleries participating in this year’s fair, alongside in-depth interviews with the artists taking part in Frieze Projects.
