Press Realise
Schaulager is
pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition with US artist Paul Chan (born 1973
in Hong Kong) scheduled to open in spring 2014.This will be Chan's first major
solo exhibition since the artist's series of large scale digital projections
"The 7 lights" was presented at the Serpentine Gallery in London 2007
and at the New Museum in 2008. His works have been exhibited widely in many
international shows, including much acclaimed installations at Venice Biennale
2009 and Documenta 2012.
Chan, who lives
and works in NY, is one of the most versatile and unpredictable artists of his
generation and certainly one of the most original voices in contemporary art
today. Active as artist, writer, and publisher, he engages the viewer and the
public into a challenging discourse about the place of art in social and
political life.
The artist’s
scope ranges from sculpture, drawings and installation to light projections,
animations, invented fonts and site-specific interventions. He has written and
published extensively on contemporary art and theory as well as issues in wider
circles of culture.
The presentation
at Schaulager will contain an entirely new body of work specifically conceived
for the exhibition in Basel. A considerable number of complex installations and
sculptures will be complemented by a selection of earlier works from Chan's
striking career.
Laurenz
Foundation and Chan's press Badlands Unlimited will release an artist's book as
well as a book of selected writings by the artist on the occasion of the
exhibition. In addition, Schaulager will produce an exhibition catalogue.
