Il primo ottobre 2014 Pirelli HangarBicocca inaugura Light Time Tales a cura di Andrea Lissoni, la prima grande mostra personale di Joan Jonas (New York, 1936) ospitata presso un’istituzione italiana, che riunirà, tra opere storiche e più recenti, dieci installazioni e nove video monocanale, tra cui un nuovo video concepito appositamente per Pirelli HangarBicocca. Tra le opere in mostra Reanimation, simbolo dell’evoluzione delle sperimentazioni di Joan Jonas, è punto di partenza dell’omonima performance in collaborazione con il musicista e compositore jazz Jason Moran che sarà presentata il 21 ottobre 2014.
Joan Jonas è una delle più rispettate e riconosciute artiste viventi. Considerata la massima autorità in campo di storia e teoria della performance, si è affermata negli anni 60 e 70 grazie alla sua pionieristica pratica performativa e video.
Il suo lavoro ha reinterpretato in modo assolutamente originale la relazione tra l’arte e le forme della narrazione, includendo nelle sue opere, accanto all’immagine video, alla scultura e alla performance, la presenza della parola come motore di immaginario. Joan Jonas rappresenterà gli Stati Uniti alla 56° edizione della Biennale di Venezia, in apertura a maggio 2015, con una mostra presentata dal MIT List of Visual Arts Center. Attualmente è Professor Emerita presso il Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Program in Art, Culture and Technology di Boston, ed è autrice di testi di riferimento sul tema delle performing arts. Ha partecipato alle più importanti mostre collettive degli ultimi trent’anni, fra cui la Biennale di Venezia nel 2009 e varie edizioni di documenta di Kassel (1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 2002, 2012).
On 1 October 2014, Light Time Tales, the first anthological exhibition in Italy devoted to the art of Joan Jonas (New York, 1936), will open at Pirelli HangarBicocca. Curated by Andrea Lissoni, the exhibition will bring together - with both historic and recent works - ten installations and nine single-channel videos, among which a new video especially conceived for Pirelli HangarBicocca. One of the exhibited artworks, Reanimation, a symbol of how Joan Jonas’s experiments have developed, is the starting point for a performance of the same name together with the musician and jazz composer Jason Moran, which will be presented on October 21st 2014. Considered as a major figure for the history and theory of performance, she became known during the 1960s and 1970s through her pioneering performances and videos.
Her work gives a unique reinterpretation of the relationship between art and narrative forms, alongside her use of video, sculpture and performance, the artist includes language as a powerful source of imaginary. Joan Jonas will represent the United States of America in the 56th edition of the 2015 Venice Biennale with an exhibition presented by the MIT List Visual Arts Center. Joan Jonas is currently Professor Emerita in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Program in Art, Culture and Technology in Boston, and is the author of reference texts on the performing arts.
