La rosa del BMW Art Journey 2020.

Oggi Art Basel e BMW hanno annunciato la rosa degli artisti 2020 del BMW Art Journey, un'iniziativa congiunta che riconosce e sostiene artisti emergenti in tutto il mondo. Come uno studio mobile, il BMW Art Journey può portare gli artisti quasi ovunque nel mondo a sviluppare nuove idee e immaginare nuovi progetti creativi.

Dato che lo spettacolo Art Basel di quest'anno a Hong Kong ha dovuto essere annullato a causa dello scoppio e della diffusione del nuovo coronavirus, Covid-19, la giuria ha condotto il suo processo di selezione online. Gli artisti e le loro gallerie sono stati invitati a presentare domande digitali, tra cui un breve video degli artisti che spiega il loro lavoro e processo. Per la prima volta, i partecipanti idonei includevano non solo artisti del settore Discoveries della mostra 2020, ma - più in generale - artisti presentati da gallerie partecipanti fondate meno di dieci anni fa. 

La giuria internazionale ha scelto la seguente lista ristretta:

Samson Young, artista e vincitore del primo BMW Art Journey

"Gli artisti selezionati sono uniti da un interesse comune per le pratiche guidate dalla ricerca che sono ben posizionate per beneficiare del supporto che la BMW Art Journey può fornire", ha osservato la giuria nella sua decisione unanime. "Pur offrendo prospettive che sono unicamente proprie, le visioni di questi artisti non sono vincolate da confini nazionali e culturali".

“Nella pratica collaborativa di Amy Lien e Enzo Camacho, la ricerca archivistica e antropologica giunge a terra installazioni che rendono visibili narrazioni urgenti, complesse e improbabili. La loro presentazione programmata per Art Basel a Hong Kong, basata su un murale religioso del pittore filippino-americano Alfonso Ossorio della metà del secolo, ci è sembrato uno dei progetti più sfaccettati e avvincenti del duo fino ad oggi. Jes Fan eccelle nel suo uso di materiali, come vetro, silicone e resina. Abbiamo apprezzato il suo esame del corpo a livello molecolare, esplorandone i limiti e inquadrando l'esistenza di un corpo biologico in una contemporaneità digitale. Ha anche sondato il concetto di alterità, mettendo in discussione categorie di razza, genere e identità ricevute. Nella densamente popolata città di Hong Kong, Leelee Chan apre spazi risonanti con le sue sculture, come se provenissero da una dimensione sconosciuta. I suoi oggetti eterei, dall'aspetto extraterrestre sono composti dai detriti della grande città. Come un'archeologa, assembla istantanee frammentate di una civiltà urbana. Allo stesso tempo, gli oggetti sembrano trascendere la comprensione umana dello spazio e del tempo ", afferma la giuria.

Ali Kazim at Jhaveri Contemporary, Mumbai

Ali Kazim (b. 1979) lives and works in Lahore, Pakistan. He received his Master of Fine Arts from the Slade School of Fine Art, London. Ali Kazim forms multi-layered compositions to create uniquely textured paintings that include elements of narrative andfantasy. He works meticulously in watercolor and graphite, using techniques acquired from studying the watercolor wash and miniature painting techniques of the Bengal andMughal schools. At this year’s Art Basel show in Hong Kong, the artist presents an immersive installation that draws a primary inspiration from the landscape around his hometown of Lahore. Kazim will participate in the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, opening in November 2018 in Brisbane.

Zac Langdon-Pole at Michael Lett, Auckland

Zac Langdon-Pole (b. 1988) lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He studied at ElamSchool of Fine Arts, Auckland and at the Städelschule, Frankfurt. In his work he uses Paper Nautilus Shells, fragile egg-case-shells, made by the genus of Octopedes known as Argonauts, and unique fragments of Meteorite handcrafted to fill the shell’s aperture. At this year’s edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong, Langdon-Pole is presenting an installation of new sculptures that form a poetic exploration of identity and belonging. In 2017, he was awarded for the Ars Viva Prize for young artists living in Germany. Recent exhibitions include Between Bridges, Berlin, Ars Viva 2018, Berlin, S.M.A.K. Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent and Kunstverein München, Munich. 

Gala Porras-Kim at Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles

Gala Porras-Kim (b.1984) lives and works in Los Angeles, United States. She received a Master of Fine Arts from California Institute of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies from University of California, Los Angeles. Her work questions the social and political contexts that influence the manifestation and interpretation of language and history. Her artistic approach comes from a research-based practice that aims to reconsider how intangible subjects have been represented in the fields of linguistics, history, and conservation. At this year's Art Basel show in Hong Kong she is presenting a group of artifacts that reconstruct and reimagine ambiguous historical fragments from various ethnographic institutions. Her work was displayed at solo exhibitions at Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles and LABOR, Mexico City. Recently she has been included in group exhibitions at Seoul Museum of Art and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

The three artists are now invited to submit a proposal for their very own personal journey, with the winner to be announced in early summer 2018.

'As jury, we were impressed by the variety and quantity of works and made a unanimous decision about the three shortlisted artists. In this year’s edition of BMW Art Journey at Art Basel in Hong Kong, the jurors noticed a wide search for narrative with a mostly consistent search for fact. Within the BMW Art Journey this time the number of eligible galleries was by far the greatest, representing artists of the most diverse backgrounds. 

We admired Ali Kazim’s meditative approach to the desolate landscape of Pakistan, and found his labor-intensive process combining miniature painting techniques with a contemporary sensibility to be layered and haunting. Zac Langdon-Pole’s work ‘Passport (Argonauta)’ creates a poetical and surprising combination of materials. Proposing a new notion of the passport, the nautilus shell and meteorites from different parts of the world suggesting a metaphysical and timeless idea of identities. We appreciated Gala PorrasKim’s investigation into and imagination of ways in which objects within institutional collections undergo reinterpretation via changing social and physical contexts. She touches on the subjectivity of history and the endless possibilities of making meaning of fragments and traces', states the jury. In collaboration with the winning artist, the journey will be documented and shared with the public through publications, online and social media.

During this year’s Art Basel show in Hong Kong, the 2017 winner of the BMW Art Journey from the Discoveries sector, Astha Butail (represented by GALLERYSKE, New Dehli, Bangalore) presents some first insights into her upcoming project 'In the Absence of Writing' at the BMW Lounge. Throughout her journey, the artist will visit Yazd (Iran), Jerusalem (Israel), London (United Kingdom), Varanasi, Pune, New Delhi and Mumbai (India) to discover memories and living traditions that are passed down through teaching and oral poetry. For the BMW Art Journey, Butail plans to investigate the Zoroastrian Avesta, Jewish Oral Torah and Indian Veda traditions by observing and recording their different memory techniques and interviewing scholars and practitioners of each tradition. 

The latest edition in the BMW Art Journey book series is also presented at the fair giving insights about Abigail Reynolds’s BMW Art Journey 'The Ruins of Time: Lost Libraries of the Silk Road'. Images, texts and other documents originating from her experience are included in the book – thus completing a journey that both starts and ends with the institution of the library. Houston–based artist to explore the notion of the Afro-Atlantic.

Munich/Basel. Art Basel and BMW are delighted to present Jamal Cyrus as the next BMW Art Journey winner. The international jury selected him unanimously from a shortlist of three artists whose works were exhibited in the Positions sector at last year’s Art Basel show in Miami Beach. Jamal Cyrus is represented by Inman Gallery, Houston.

The notion of the Afro-Atlantic provides the conceptual underpinning for Jamal Cyrus’ journey. It is, in his own words, “an intercontinental and multinational geography describing the circulation of ideas between Africa, Europe, and the Americas.” Inspired in part by Paul Gilroy’s writings from the early 1990s, Cyrus aims to examine the many diverse cultural hybrids that have emerged through protracted interaction between the continents. Such cultural hybrids – molded by forces of conquest, colonization, slavery, industry, migration, and philosophy – can be apprehended in the cultural centers Cyrus plans to visit. These include among others the Elmina Castle in Accra, Ghana; the Theatre Champs-Elysees, in Paris, France; Brixton's Electric Avenue, in, London, England; the Alhambra in Granada, Spain; and Congo Square, in New Orleans, United States. 

At each location, Cyrus will record interviews with artists, musicians, historians, and philosophers who engage with the creative traditions of the Afro-Atlantic. "The journey promises to be a transformational process involving travel, dialogue, collective imagination, and intuitive response that will allow new ideas to surface in my work”, said Cyrus. 

Art Basel and BMW will collaborate with the artist to document the journey and share it with a broader public through print publications, online and social media.

The international experts awarding Jamal Cyrus’ journey proposal were Massimiliano Gioni, Artistic Director, New Museum, New York City; Gabi Ngcobo, Curator, Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, Berlin; Victoria Noorthoorn, Director, Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires; Philip Tinari, Director, Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art, Beijing; and Susanne Pfeffer, Director, Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt. 

“Jamal Cyrus' BMW Art Journey delineates an imaginary geography that transforms relations of power and imposed hierarchies,” the five-member jury stated after its unanimous decision. “His journey combines elements of directed research and open-ended discovery, all within a deeply considered theoretical framework. His project struck us as a profound and sincere search for an understanding of the self, through the artistic lens of an individual who never forgets his role as a teacher, and who therefore foresees the multiplying effect of his experience. Cyrus’ BMW Art Journey will expand and amplify a practice that has already brought much to the conversation around culture, history, and identity in the United States.”

In addition to Jamal Cyrus, the shortlisted artists from the Positions sector for emerging artists at Art Basel in Miami Beach included: A.K. Burns (represented by Callicoon Fine Arts, New York) and Mariela Scafati (represented by Isla Flotante, Buenos Aires). 

Launched in 2015, the BMW Art Journey is a collaboration between Art Basel and BMW, created to recognize and support emerging artists worldwide. From 2018 onwards this unique award is open to artists who are exhibiting in the Discoveries sector during Art Basel in Hong Kong. A judging panel comprised of internationally renowned experts meet first to select a shortlist of three artists from the sector, who are then invited to submit proposals for a journey aimed to further develop their ideas and artistic work. The jury reconvenes to choose a winner from the three proposals. 

Past winners of the BMW Art Journey include sound and performance artist Samson Young presented by a.m. Space, Hong Kong at Art Basel's Hong Kong show in 2015, who represented Hong Kong at the 2017 Venice Biennale; German video artists Henning Fehr and Philipp Rühr presented by Galerie Max Mayer, Dusseldorf at Art Basel's Miami Beach show in 2015; British artist Abigail Reynolds presented by Rokeby, London at Art Basel's show in Hong Kong in 2016 as well as Max Hooper Schneider, presented by High Art, Paris at Art Basel's Miami Beach show in 2016 and Astha Butail who was recently announced as the fifth winner and is presented by GALLERYSKE, New Delhi, Bangalore.

The next selections for the BMW Art Journey will take place during Art Basel in Hong Kong on March 28, 5:30 PM at the BMW Lounge. The winner of the BMW Art Journey from the Hong Kong show will be announced in early summer 2018.

Dal mese di agosto 2015, l'artista e compositore Hong Kong Samson Young ha viaggiato per il progetto BMW Art Journey. Il suo progetto "Per chi suona la campana: un viaggio nella storia del conflitto di Suoni" lo ha portato in un tour nei cinque continenti.

Durante i suoi viaggi Giovane rivolto la sua attenzione alle campane che danno forma al concetto di "conflitto" in una varietà di modi.

L'iniziativa BMW Art Journey è un progetto di collaborazione fra Art Basel e BMW per sostenere gli artisti emergenti.

In occasione di Art Basel Miami Beach, Hatje Cantz pubblicherà "The Sense of Movement: quando gli artisti di viaggio", la prima pubblicazione con  BMW Art Journey, il prossimo Dicembre 2015. Il libro mette in luce settanta progetti iconici sull'arte e gli artisti in movimento. Inoltre, l'artista Samson Young darà prime riflessioni sul suo lavoro presso il Giardino Botanico  alla fiera di Miami Beach.

Samson Young vince il BMW Art Journey

Samson Young is awarded the first BMW Art Journey. BMW and Art Basel send Hong Kong artist on a journey of creative discovery across five continents.

Munich/ Hong Kong. Art Basel and BMW are pleased to announce Samson Young as the first BMW Art Journey winner. The BMW Art Journey will allow Young to embark on a creative journey across five continents. Young will undertake a worldwide tour of iconic bells, documenting them and creating works of visual art and music composition in response to them. Samson Young was one of three shortlisted artists selected from this year's Discoveries sector at Art Basel’s show in Hong Kong.

Samson Young’s project for the inaugural BMW Art Journey, titled “For Whom the Bell Tolls: A Journey Into the Sonic History of Conflict,” builds on the Hong Kong-based artist’s longstanding fascination with military technology and his training as a composer. In this project, he turns his attention to bells, which bring together these two related areas of interest. Cannons and bells are made of essentially the same materials. In times of war, bells would be melted down to create cannons, and when peace returned, bells would be recast from surplus weapons. For Young’s 2015 BMW Art Journey he will focus on bells that give form to the idea of “conflict” in a variety of ways. His journey will take him to bells and research institutions in Myanmar, Kenya, Austria, Cologne, Morocco, Sicily, South Korea, Australia and several cities in the UK and United States, where the artist will notate and record the sounds of exceptional and historically resonant bells, generating an archive of bell recordings, a series of “bell sound sketches,” a set of new bronze bells, and an original musical composition for bell-ringers and orchestra.  

Art Basel and BMW will collaborate with the awarded artist to document the journey and share it with the public through print publications, online and social media. On June 16, the first preview day of Art Basel’s show in Basel, Samson Young will be available for interviews.

The experts conducting the judging were Richard Armstrong, Director Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Claire Hsu, Director Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong; Matthias Mühling, Director Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich; Shwetal Patel, Curator, India; and Pauline J. Yao, Curator Visual Art M+, Hong Kong.

Next to Samson Young (am space, Hong Kong), the shortlisted artists showing in Discoveries, the sector for emerging artists at Art Basel's Hong Kong show, were: Mika Tajima with Eleven Rivington, New York, and Trevor Yeung presented by Blindspot Gallery, Hong Kong.

Being impressed by the thoughtfully considered and articulated proposals of all three shortlisted artists, the jury has said of their choice: “Samson Young’s proposal stood out for several reasons: its depth and clarity, its multi-layered approach and its ability to bring a simultaneously contemporary and historical dimension to notions of place. His research will thoughtfully interweave multiple contexts addressing major issues to include war, religion, community and the politics of sound. He shifts the focus from seeing to listening and his project will show that also ideologies can have a certain sound. Samson Young has crafted a journey with ambitious scope and strong potential to offer meaningful strides in his development as an artist.”

Samson Young added: “I am, naturally, thrilled to be able to make this journey happen. The BMW Art Journey is a real luxury in that it facilitates the research and the fieldwork - the drifting that drives the work - that is indispensable to the outcome of the creative process.”

The BMW Art Journey is a new global collaboration between Art Basel and BMW, which has been created to recognize and support emerging artists worldwide. The prize is open to artists who are showing in Discoveries and Positions in the Hong Kong and Miami Beach show respectively. Two judging panels, comprised of internationally renowned experts, shortlist three artists, who are then invited to submit proposals for a journey aimed to further develop their ideas and artistic work.

The next judging of the BMW Art Journey will be held during Art Basel in Miami Beach, where three artists from the Positions sector will be shortlisted next December. The winner will be announced in early 2016.

The BMW Art Journey is a new global art initiative by BMW and Art Basel offering artists an oppurtunity to undertake a journey of creative discovery.

Like a mobile studio, the BMW Art Journey can take an artist almost anywhere in the world - to undertake research, make contacts, and envision and create new work. Artists that are showing in Art Basel's sectors for emerging-artists in Miami Beach and Hong Kong are eligible for the BMW Art Journey. Starting 2015, it will be awarded twice a year to one artist at each location. Two international expert juries, one for Hong Kong and one for Miami Beach, will select a shortlist of three artists per sector and will invite them to submit proposals for a journey. One artist from each shortlist will get the chance to undertake the BMW Art Journey. The selected artist from the Discoveries sector of Art Basel's show in Hong Kong, which is taking place in March 2015, will be announced in the summer of 2015. The selected artist from the Positions sector of Art Basel in Miami Beach will be announced in early 2016
