Frieze New York Art Fair

  • Frieze Talks, curated by Tom Eccles and Amy Zion (both Bard College, New York), drawing upon contemporary literature and challenging sound-bite, tweet-driven narratives
  • Museum acquisition fund, with the Brooklyn Museum, supported by LIFEWTR
  • Ambitious solo presentations by the world’s most exciting artists, including Tracey Emin, Theaster Gates, David Hockney, Betye Saar, Arthur Jafa, Zoe Leonard and Kemang Wa Lehulere.
  • Seminal 20th-century artists, including Roy Lichtenstein, Nancy Grossman, Louise Bourgeois, Phyllida Barlow, Henri Matisse, among others .
  • Curated gallery presentations, exploring global contemporary questions, from migration to identity politics and experiences of war
  • Frieze Live, full details of the fair’s new section for performance, curated by Adrienne Edwards (recently appointed Whitney Museum of American Art, New York). Artists include: Adam Pendleton, Hank Willis Thomas and Lara Schnitger.
  • For Your Infotainment / Hudson and Feature Inc., full details of a new gallery section curated by Matthew Higgs (White Columns, New York). Artists include: Takashi Murakami, Tom of Finland and Lily van der Stokker.
  • Curated sections, including Spotlight, curated by Toby Kamps (Blaffer Art Museum, University of Houston), and Frame, advised for the first time by Andrew Bonacina (The Hepworth Wakefield) and Laura McLean-Ferris (Swiss Institute, New York).

Press release:
Frieze is pleased to announce the appointment of the London-based creative design consultancy Universal Design Studio as the architectural team for Frieze London 2014. This year’s fair will take place 15–18 October 2014 in Regent’s Park, London and is sponsored by Deutsche Bank for the 11th consecutive year.
Universal Design Studio was founded in 2001 by Edward Barber, OBE and Jay Osgerby, OBE to focus on architecture and interiors, building upon their award-winning product and furniture design portfolio.
Frieze London is one of the world’s leading contemporary art fairs and brings an international art audience to the UK capital every October. In previous years the fair has employed a series of globally recognised architectural firms: Carmody Groarke (2011–2013), Caruso St John (2008-2010), Jamie Fobert (2006–2007) and David Adjaye (2003-2005).
Universal’s clients include the Ace Hotel, Vitra, LVMH and major cultural institutions such as The Victoria and Albert Museum, Science Museum and National Gallery in London. Recent completed projects include: Google Web Lab at the Science Museum, London; exhibition design for Vitra’s Vitrahaus exhibition, Weil am Rhein; design of the ‘Magnificent Maps’ exhibition at the British Library, London; and both the interior and exterior of the Ace Hotel, London.
Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover, founders of Frieze, commented: ‘The architecture and design of the fair have always been an important part of our identity. This year we were drawn to Universal in particular due to their work on interiors and focus on materials. As some of the best designers work- ing in this area, their lateral thinking has been demonstrated by some of their great furniture and even their design for the olympic torch. We’re really looking forward to them bringing this sensibility to Frieze. ’
Jason Holley, Director of Universal Design Studio, added: ‘We look forward to producing a spatial experience that cements the fair’s reputation as a must-see destination on the arts calendar.’
