Buren + Kapoor

La galleria Continua nei suoi spazi di via Castello A San Gimignano ha reso possibile la collaborazione fra Daniel Buren e Anish Kapoor in un originale progetto espositivo.

L'evento si sviluppa in un doppio percorso storico, con alcune delle più emblematiche opere degli artisti, che si intervalla in un incontrano, in forma di una grande installazione artistica.

Daniel Buren a Miami

Bortolami is pleased to announce the second iteration of Daniel Buren / Miami, a yearlong, evolving exhibition that marks the 50th anniversary of the artist’s iconic 8.7 cm stripe. The first iteration, a selection of Buren’s paintings from 1965 to present, explored the discovery and subsequent use of the readymade stripe. 

This second iteration consists of a new work in situ titled Passage aller-retour, a site-specific installation comprised of five porticos or gateways placed at regular intervals throughout the gallery, their striped sides punctuating the space. This “passage” terminates with a mirror of the same dimensions as the gates, creating a doubling effect. 

The artist considers the stripe a “visual tool”, which he uses to explore the relationship between art and the structures that frame it. Interventions and works in situ like Passage aller-retour re-contextualize the audience’s experience and perception of space. 

This works relates to his large body of architectural scale works that physically alter the audience’s environment and shifts our engagement with the world around us. This new programming initiative, which the gallery is calling Artist / City, is an experimental alternative for artists to show their work in American cities outside the standard five-week gallery show. Pairing an artist with a space in a different city for a year, we hope to set forth a progressive exhibition structure, expand our programming, and grow geographically without opening full-scale operations. The aim is to create a structure in which our artists can investigate their work without restriction. 

Daniel Buren (b. 1938) has been the subject of major museum exhibitions worldwide. His work is included in prestigious private and public collections internationally. Buren has exhibited in the Venice Biennale more than 10 times and was awarded the Golden Lion for his French Pavilion in 1986. In 2007, he received the Praemium Imperiale for Painting from Japan and was selected to exhibit at MONUMENTA 2012 at the Grand Palais in Paris. Currently, Buren is the subject of a major exhibition at BOZAR/Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Belgium. He has just completed two commissions for works in situ: a bombastic alteration of the exterior of the Vuitton Foundation in Paris, France; and a colorful re-design of the glass over-ground walkways at Hunter College in New York City.

La metropolitana di Londra sta progettando un nuovo intervento alla Tottenham Court Road  che prevede anche un intervento artistico di Daniel Buren, il tutto previsto per il 2016.

Internationally celebrated artist Daniel Buren to create new permanent artwork at Tottenham Court Road Tube station Art on the Underground is pleased to announce that the renowned French artist Daniel Buren has been selected to create a new permanent installation for the upgraded Tube station at Tottenham Court Road. 

The rebuilding of Tottenham Court Road station is due to be completed in 2016. At least 200,000 people per day are expected to use the station. Customers will be able to experience the dramatic Buren installation as they enter and move through the station. The new artwork will become a major feature of the Oxford Street entrance and ticket hall. Buren will create a colourful series of large scale diamond and circle shapes that will be fixed to the station’s internal glass walls. Designed in his trademark striped vinyl, the shapes will allow light to pass through to keep the public areas bright. 

A cabinet containing the ‘parents’ of the forms that are transforming the station’s surfaces - a set of Buren’s shapes in sculptural, 3D form – will be installed in the ticket hall. Tamsin Dillon, Head of Art on the Underground, said: “It is very exciting to be working with one of the world’s great artists, renowned for his memorable installations – something that will enhance the new ticket hall at this key station and give customers a chance to think beyond their fast-paced London journeys. 

The Art on the Underground Programme can offer passengers a moment of contemplation while travelling across the Capital.” Buren’s is the second piece of permanent artwork to be installed at Tottenham Court Road station, complementing the now iconic 1984 mosaic designs by the late Eduardo Paolozzi. The majority of the Paolozzi mosaics are being preserved in the upgraded station, whilst some smaller sections will be carefully removed and displayed elsewhere. Famous for his site specific, bold and energetic works, Buren is a worthy addition to the station’s artistic heritage. 

Now with over 2,000 artworks worldwide, the artist has punctuated the last forty years with some thought-provoking public art projects, often using stripes and geometric forms to frame public spaces. His best known and most controversial piece, installed in 1986, is Les Deux Plateaux, or Les Colonnes de Buren (Buren's Columns), a 3,000 m² area of variously truncated, striped columns in the great courtyard of the Palais Royal, Paris. 

The installation provoked intense debate over the integration of contemporary art into historic buildings. Buren’s most recent work is a temporary piece for the new Turner Contemporary in Margate. Borrowing and Multiplying the Landscape focuses the viewer on the site where JMW Turner once painted, framing the view through the vast sea-facing window. Buren has traced a huge circle on the glass and then ‘filled in’ the gaps in the square window with transparent yellow, striped vinyl, directing our gaze. Mirrors at either end of the work create infinite reflections of the seascape.

Il Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art di Gateshead presenta il lavoro di Daniel Buren  con un particolare progetto per gli spazi della galleria 4. 




Noto per la sua pittura a livello zero, adottando la striscia verticale larga 8,7 centimetri, che negli anni ha sapientemente evoluto in interventi cromatici puri e minimalisti. 

Una città nelle Utopie - Monumenta 2014

Prenderà avvio dal 10 Maggio la nuova edizione di Monumenta, che dal 2007 invita un artista di statura internazionale per affrontare la navata del Grand Palais, un grande serra di 13.500 m2 di cui 35 di altezza.

Hanno già realizzato progetti incredibili Anselm Kiefer, con le sue stanze sotto il sole, la passeggiata di Richard Serra, la grande raccolta del tempo passato di Christian Boltanski, gli spazi interni esterni di Anish Kapoor e i colori di Daniel Buren sono riusciti a rispondere a questa sfida.

Per la sesta edizione, saranno gli artisti di origine russa Ilya ed Emilia Kabakov, che offriranno al pubblico di perdersi nei meandri di una città utopica, una strana città.

Un caffè d'artista

Coerente nel suo progetto di qualità la Illy da anni persegue un’attenzione a ampio aggio sul mondo dell’arte contemporanea sia come sponsor sia come promozione e diffusione. Azione che trova compimento nella meravigliosa serie delle tazzine e nei pratici barattoli del caffè. Quest’anno per la serie delle tazzine, iniziativa nata nel 1996, è stato coinvolto Daniel Buren, che proprio nei giorni dell’evento Monumenta 2012 a Parigi, ha presentato una nuova serie in edizione limitata, composta da  quattro tazzine, che ritrovano l’elemento visivo scelto nel 1965 dall’artista. Patter diventato poi ricorrente nelle sue opere: strisce bianche e colorate in alternanza, larghe 8,7cm, ispirate alla stampa di un tessuto molto impiegato in quell’epoca per confezionare tende da sole, sedie a sdraio, materassi e cuscini. Un “outil visuel”  che l’artista utilizza per ridefinire gli spazi e costringere l’occhio a creare un nuovo rapporto con il luogo e l’oggetto. Le quattro tazzine nere poggiano su piattini dal diametro sempre più ampio; la striscia nera al centro, come un racconto che si svela poco a poco, lascia spazio al bianco; poi al verde, al giallo, all'arancione e al blu che colorano il lato nascosto del piattino ridisegnando l’opera e l’ambiente di cui è parte.

Per la serie dei barattolo, nata nel 2006 illy Art Collection propone quest’anno Kiki Smith col suo emozionante decoro colorato.

 I barattoli da 250 g di caffè illy espresso hanno tutte le diciture scritte su una pellicola trasparente che può essere rimossa così da mostrare il decoro in tutta la sua bellezza. Kiki Smith vive e lavora a New York e le sue creazioni affondano le radici nella storia e nel femminismo, ricche di magia e analisi del privato e del collettivo.

Monumenta 2012 - Intervento di Daniel Buren al Gran Palais di Parigi

E’ già passato un anno dalla grande installazione di Anish Kapoor, che ha creato lunghe code sull’affollata Avenue Winston Churchill. Ora, dal 10 Maggio al 21 Giugno, è la volta di Daniel Buren che tenterà di bissare il grande successo precedente. 

Siamo nei magnifici spazi del Grand Palais di Parigi per la quinta edizione di Monumenta, l’evento annuale ideato dal Ministero della Cultura e della Comunicazione sull’arte contemporanea. Dopo Anselm Kiefer che espone nel 2007, Richard Serra che minimalisticamente occupò lo spazio nel 2008, Christian Boltanski del 2010 e l’artista anglo-indiano ora è la volta del noto artista francese. 

I 13500 m² di questo stupendo edificio sono pronti per ospitare la grande installazione dal titolo “Excentrique(s) - travail in situ” ideata dall’artista nato nel sobborgo di Boulogne-Billancourt. 

Noto per le strisce verticali alternate bianche e colorate, di larghezza 8,7 cm, che sono il suo segno caratteristico, nato nel 1965, quando Buren le vide su un tessuto al mercato di San Pietro a Parigi. La semplicità di questa tessitura attivò un’idea di semplificazione estetica che Daniel Buren adottò per il suo percorso artistico. Segno che nel tempo ha rielaborato in tante declinazioni senza però cambiarlo nel suo formato.
