Alicja Kwade da Pace a New York

Molto bella la mostra in corso ora alla Pace  con le opere di  Alicja Kwade "Telos Tales"  a New York. Con sculture monumentali inedite e nuove opere a tecnica mista, questa mostra segna il debutto di Kwade alla Pace di New York da quando la galleria ha iniziato a rappresentarla nel 2023. Aperta dal 7 maggio al 15 agosto, la mostra coincide con l'edizione di quest'anno di Frieze New York.

Kwade è nota a livello internazionale per sculture, installazioni pubbliche di grandi dimensioni, film, fotografie e opere su carta che si confrontano poeticamente e criticamente con concetti scientifici e filosofici. Attraverso un vocabolario distintivo che abbraccia riflessione, ripetizione e manipolazione di oggetti quotidiani e materiali naturali, l'artista solleva interrogativi sulle strutture e sui sistemi che governano e plasmano la nostra vita quotidiana. Nelle sue opere contemplative, che smantellano i confini della percezione, sfida idee e convinzioni comunemente accettate, proponendo al contempo nuovi modi di vedere e comprendere la realtà.

Le opere di Kwade sono presenti nelle collezioni del Los Angeles County Museum of Art, dell'Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden di Washington, DC, del Centre Georges Pompidou di Parigi, della Neue Nationalgalerie di Berlino, della National Gallery of Australia di Canberra, del mumok – Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig di Vienna e dello Yuz Museum di Shanghai, tra le altre istituzioni internazionali. Le sue sculture pubbliche si trovano anche in tutto il mondo: alla Stanford University di Palo Alto, in California, al MIT di Cambridge, nel Massachusetts, oltre che in Germania, Italia, Svezia e altri paesi. La sua pratica si inserisce in una tradizione di pionieri dell'astrattismo del XX secolo, all'interno del programma di Pace, tra cui Louise Nevelson – che ha plasmato quella che sarebbe diventata nota come arte installativa con i suoi iconici "ambienti" scultorei – e Agnes Martin, la cui opera è stata esposta insieme a quella di Kwade in una mostra a due presso lo spazio della galleria a Los Angeles nel 2024.

Alicja Kwade al Roof Garden del Met

Il Roof Garden del Met quest'anno ospiterà un intervento dell'artista Alicja Kwade dal titolo ParaPivot.

Come tutti gli anni lo spazio del Roof Garden sarà luogo di intervento creativo dal 16 aprile al 27 ottobre 2019, quest'anno con l'artista berlinese Alicja Kwade che ha creato due sculture: ParaPivot I e II. 

Le sculture torreggianti sono costituite da telai in acciaio verniciato a polvere che si intersecano ad angoli obliqui. Al suo interno sono presenti nove sfere massicce che galleggiano in apparente assenza di peso. Le appendici della scultura in acciaio si espandono verso l'esterno attorno a più punti di asse e sembrano tracciare le vie orbitali del globo. 

Il balletto scultoreo di Kwade evoca un sistema solare in miniatura, un pezzo di spazio esterno che si è stabilito temporaneamente sul giardino pensile Iris e B. Gerald Cantor.

(February 7, 2019)—The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced today that Berlin-based artist Alicja Kwade has been selected to create a site-specific installation for The Met's Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden. The Roof Garden Commission: Alicja Kwade, ParaPivot will be on view from April 16 through October 27, 2019. The exhibition is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Additional support is provided by Cynthia Hazen Polsky and Leon B. Polsky. "The Met's Roof Garden Commission is a catalyst for bold artistic intervention and the continuous rethinking of a unique space, and it's with great anticipation that we look forward to unveiling Alicja Kwade's project this spring," said Max Hollein, Director of The Met. "The setting—perched atop the Museum's vast collection and set against New York City's iconic skyline and Central Park—presents a compelling site for Kwade, whose works offer an expansive view of the history of art and science." The Roof Garden Commission: Alicja Kwade, ParaPivot was conceived by the artist in consultation with Sheena Wagstaff, Leonard A. Lauder Chairman of Modern and Contemporary Art, and Kelly Baum, Cynthia Hazen Polsky and Leon Polsky Curator of Contemporary Art, both of The Met's Department of Modern and Contemporary Art. It is the seventh in a series of site-specific commissions for the outdoor space. The exhibition will be accompanied by a book published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and distributed by Yale University Press. About the Artist Born in 1979, Alicja Kwade lives and works in Berlin. Raised by a cultural scientist mother and a conservator and art historian father, she grew up in Poland and, later, Germany. In 1999, Kwade entered the Universität der Künste in Berlin to study sculpture, and three years later she began showing in solo and group exhibitions, achieving a remarkable degree of critical success in a relatively short period of time. Although Kwade has also made videos and sound art, she is best known for her sculptures and installations, most of which are designed with specific spaces in mind. With equal parts poetry and critical acumen, her work not only reflects on the nature of time and perception; it also investigates the structures and theories we have adopted to understand the physical universe in which we reside. The resulting works are elegant, astute, and highly experiential. Kwade's work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, including Out of Ousia, at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen (2018); Medium Median, at Whitechapel Gallery in London (2016); and The Void of the Moment in Motion, at Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt (2015). Her work has also been featured in such prestigious exhibitions as the 57th Venice Biennale, Viva Arte Viva (2016), and the 2016 Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Forming in the Pupil of an Eye. This is the artist's first solo exhibition at a museum in the United States.
