L’artista dell’anno

Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle in Berlin presents ‘Bird Song’ by Kemang Wa Lehuelere from March 24, 2017 through June 18, 2017.

Kemang Wa Lehulere, born in Cape Town, is Deutsche Bank's new "Artist of the Year". The exhibition is the South African artist’s first institutional solo exhibition in Germany and Lehulere is presenting his repertoire of performances, videos, installations and chalk drawings. Lehulere’s works often focus on black South African history, re-examining and re-imagining the host of narratives connected with black artists, musicians and authors. Essentially he attempts to prevent the stories of their lives and traces of their work being forgotten by history. In 2015, he received the Standard Bank Young Artist for the visual arts. The Deutsche Bank “Artist of the Year” Award is presented to a contemporary artist with an artistically and socially relevant oeuvre, integrating the media of paper and photography.

"Bird Song" is on display at the Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle, Unter den Linden 13/15, 10117 Berlin, Germany.

Deutsche Bank “Artist of the Year”

After Wangechi Mutu, 2010 (Kenya), Yto Barrada, 2011 (France/Morocco), Roman Ondák, 2012 (Slovakia), Imran Qureshi, 2013 (Pakistan), Victor Man, 2014 (Romania), and Koki Tanaka, 2015 (Japan), Basim Magdy is the seventh international artist selected as the Deutsche Bank “Artist of the Year.” Next year, he will be followed by Kemang Wa Lehulere (South Africa), the “Artist of the Year” 2017.

“The ‘Artist of the Year” award is firmly anchored in Deutsche Bank’s art program, honoring contemporary artists who address social issues and artistic aspects in new ways,” says Friedhelm Hütte, the head of Deutsche Bank’s art department. The focus is on artists who have amassed an oeuvre in which works on paper and photography play a key role. “Dynamic centers in Africa, Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe have become more important in recent years. With our award, we want to make artistic visionaries from these regions accessible to a broader public.”

The award is given on the recommendation of the Deutsche Bank Global Art Advisory Council which consists of the renowned curators Okwui Enwezor, Hou Hanru, Udo Kittelmann, and Victoria Noorthoorn. The highlight is a solo exhibition of the “Artist of the Year” at the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle in Berlin, which is accompanied by a catalogue and subsequently on view at other international museums. Apart from an extensive monograph and an edition, the agenda includes purchases of works by the “Artist of the Year” for the Deutsche Bank Collection.

The exhibition “Basim Magdy: The Stars Were Aligned for a Century of New Beginnings” is on view at the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle from April 29 to July 3, 2016. Subsequently the show will travel to Rome (MAXXI - National Museum of Art of the 21st Century) and Chicago (Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago).
