Oggi alle ore 18:00, Quartz Studio presenterà "Appunti per un miracolo permanente", la prima personale a Torino dell’artista Edoardo Piermattei (Ancona, 1992) con un testo critico di Cornelia Lauf. In mostra tre sculture, intitolate Asa Nisi Masa, realizzate dall’artista pensando allo spazio che le avrebbe accolte. Come dichiara Edoardo Piermattei:
Asa Nisi Masa sono tre sculture nate per abitare ambienti e indossare architetture. Se la mia pratica pittorica ha sempre avuto una dimensione architettonica, Asa Nisi Masa mi ha fatto spostare lo sguardo dalle architetture ai loro abitanti e ho quindi iniziato a realizzare delle sculture che potessero abitare il mio studio e indossare le mie architetture. Nella scelta dei materiali mi sono allontanato dai cementi pigmentati, per sperimentare la duttilità della cera e la fragilità della carta nel tentativo di tendere sulle sculture una pelle o, meglio, un ricordo della pelle in assenza dei corpi. Grazie all’uso di materiale organico e deperibile – cera, legno, carta e canapa – ho strappato le sculture alla loro dimensione atemporale e le ho collocate oltre che nello spazio nel tempo. Asa Nisi Masa è una filastrocca, un mantra, una preghiera: che gli occhi delle sculture possano prendere vita. In 8½ di Federico Fellini i bambini la ripetono nella speranza che, durante la notte, un dipinto possa animarsi e indicare loro con lo sguardo il posto in cui è sepolto un tesoro.
L’artista, con Asa Nisi Masa, si fa erede della grande tradizione scultorea della sua terra, le Marche, ma lo fa con la leggerezza materiale della cera di medardiana memoria e con la malinconia trasognata dei personaggi di Fellini. Un modo antico e nuovissimo di vivere la tradizione italiana in cui l’arte è sempre stata pensata come espressione di un ambiente al contempo geografico e mentale. Con Asa Nisi Masa di Piermattei Quartz Studio continua la propria riflessione sul concetto di scultura, forma espressiva paradigmatica dell’immaginario dell’occidente dai kouroi a oggi.
Edoardo Piermattei (Ancona, Italia, 1992) vive e lavora a Torino, dove ha frequentato il corso di pittura dell’Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti. Nel 2015, con altri artisti, fonda l’artist-run space Spazio Buonasera. Sue mostre personali sono state organizzate presso Spazio Buonasera, Torino (2017); Art Basel Hong Kong (2017); galleria Thomas Brambilla, Bergamo (2017).

Monday June 28, 2021 Quartz Studio is pleased to present Appunti per un miracolo permanente, the first solo show in Turin by the artist Edoardo Piermattei (Ancona, Italy, 1992). The exhibition is accompanied by a critical text written by Cornelia Lauf. Piermattei has produced three new sculptures with the Quartz Studio space in mind. As explained by the artist, Asa Nisi Masa is a series of three sculptures erected to inhabit space and wear architecture. He states:
With Asa Nisi Masa, my painting practice, which for a long time has been focused on the architectural dimension, has drawn attention to the inhabitants of architecture itself – that is why I started building statues capable of inhabiting my studio and wearing my architecture. I have set aside the pigmented concrete with which I was familiar to experience the ductility of wax and the fragility of paper, in an attempt to stretch a skin over the statues, or rather, a memory of the skin where there is no body. It is indeed through the use of perishable and organic materials – wax, wood, paper, and hemp – that I managed to tear the statues away from their atemporal dimension and situate them in both space and time. Asa Nisi Masa is a nursery rhyme, a mantra, a prayer for the statues’ eyes to come alive. In the movie 8½ by Federico Fellini some children keep repeating it: they are trying to animate a painting whose eyes might disclose to them where a treasure is buried.
With Asa Nisi Masa, the artist makes himself heir to a great sculptural tradition of his homeland, the Marche, doing so with the material lightness of wax that suggests Medardo Rosso and the dream-like melancholy of Fellini's characters. This is an age-old yet very new way of experiencing the Italian tradition in which art has always been an expression of an environment that is geographic and mental at once. With Piermattei's Asa Nisi Masa, Quartz Studio is continuing its exploration of the concept of sculpture, a paradigmatic form of expression in Western imagery from the kouroi to the present day.
Edoardo Piermattei (Ancona, Italy, 1992) lives and works in Turin, where he studied painting at the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti. In 2015, together with other artists, he founded the artist-run space Spazio Buonasera. His solo exhibitions have been held at Spazio Buonasera, Turin (2017); Art Basel, Hong Kong (2017); Thomas Brambilla Gallery, Bergamo (2017).
