Over the course of his career, Anselm Kiefer has lived and worked in various studios in Germany, France, Austria, Portugal, and the United States. Kiefer’s studios represent and encapsulate significant periods in his life and oeuvre. Some of these studios have evolved over time into immersive environments that embody all aspects of his artistic practice. La Ribaute, Kiefer’s former studio-estate in Barjac, France, located 70 kilometers northwest of Avignon, was the epicenter of his creative work from 1992 to 2007. Over the past three decades the artist has continued to develop this studio-estate, which currently spans forty hectares and consists of more than seventy art spaces connected through an intricate network of paths, tunnels and underground crypts.
La Ribaute, one of the most intriguing and complex art spaces of our time, offers an extensive representation of Kiefer’s work in various media. Eschaton—Anselm Kiefer Foundation is dedicated to making La Ribaute accessible to visitors from around the world while preserving it for posterity as an extraordinary manifestation of human creativity.
La Ribaute, which was received by Eschaton—Anselm Kiefer Foundation as a donation from the artist in December 2020, will be open seasonally for visits starting in 2022. All visits take the form of guided tours booked in advance online.
