Mappatura It Out

Mapping It Out - An Alternative
Atlas of Contemporary Cartographies
Cartography and
infographics meet contemporary art, science and ideas
The world's
sharpest minds rethink what maps can be and do
‘A dizzying
catalogue of images that interrogate the role of maps in the 21st century’– New
Statesman
'… engrossing and
beautiful …'– www.itsnicethat.com
Over 130 of the
world’s most creative minds make sense of our exterior and interior worlds
through intriguing and imaginative maps of their own devising. Imaginative,
visionary and richly absorbing, this book will appeal to anyone interested in
how we visualize our worlds, physical or abstract, real or imagined.
Whether they
chart a newly discovered land or lay out a complicated process, maps serve to
improve our understanding of what surrounds us. They make the complex simple,
and reveal the complexity behind the apparently straightforward.
Original and
thought-provoking, Mapping It Out invites leading lights from a host
of fields to create a personal map of their own, in whatever form and showing
whatever terrain they choose, whether real-world or imaginary. Some contributors
have translated scientific data into simplified visual language, while others
have condensed vast social, political or natural forms into concise diagrams.
Many have reworked existing maps to subvert their original purpose or to
present an alternative view of reality. Others play with the map’s commitment
to truth by plotting invented worlds and charting imaginative flights of fancy.
Going further, some offer entirely new kinds of map – or even reject the map’s
claim to bear facts altogether.
In his
Introduction, acclaimed novelist Tom McCarthy reflects on the relationship
between maps, literature and knowledge, while Hans Ulrich Obrist considers the
influence of maps on artistic creativity.
With
contributions from David Adjaye, Tim Berners-Lee, Olafur Eliasson, Mona Hatoum,
Susan Hiller, Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor, John Maeda, Annette Messager, Yoko
Ono, Ed Ruscha, Bruce Sterling, Christopher Stringer, J. Craig Venter and many
others …
Hans Ulrich
Obrist is Co-Director of Exhibitions and Programmes and Director of

L'ingresso è libero fino a esaurimento posti.
Gli artisti e i video presentati
Sarah Abu Abdallah
The Salad Zone (2013), 21 min, video HD
Josh Bitelli
The Road Workers & White Liners (2013), 2 min, video HD
Bogosi Sekhukhuni
Dream II (2013), 0:53 min, video
Dream II (2013), 0:53 min, video
Dream III (2013), 2:09 min, video
Dream IV (2013), 0:26 min, video
Dream V (2013), 0:32 min, video
Dream VI (2013), 0:53 min, video
(B. Sekhukhuni).
Spencer Ashby
Cruise Collision (2013), 66 min*, video HD

89plus is a
long-term, international, multi-platform research project co-founded by
Simon Castets and Hans Ulrich Obrist. It is conceived as a mapping of the
generation born in or after 1989. Without forecasting artistic trends or
predicting future creation, 89plus manifests itself through panels, books,
periodicals and exhibitions, bringing together individuals from a generation
whose voices are only starting to be heard, yet which makes up almost half of
the world’s population.
Marked by several
paradigm-shifting events, the year 1989 saw the collapse of the Berlin Wall and
the start of the post-Cold War period; the introduction of the World Wide Web
and the beginning of the universal availability of the Internet, as well as the
orbit of the first Global Positioning System satellite. Positing a relationship
between these world-changing events and creative production at large, 89plus
introduces the work of some of this generation’s most inspiring protagonists.
Since an
introductory panel held in January 2013 at the DLD – Digital, Life, Design
conference in Munich, 89plus has conducted research in Australia with Kaldor
Public Art Projects and Hong Kong with Art Basel’s Salon series. In partnership
with the Park Avenue Armory in New York, 89plus selected visual artist and
curator Alex Dolan to be artist-in-residence during the Armory’s Under
Construction series, taking place in September 2013.
Open call
89plus announces
an open call for artists, writers, architects, filmmakers, musicians,
designers, scientists and technologists.
There is only one rule: you must be
89plus—born in or after 1989. The open call is hosted at www.89plus.com.
Submissions are
kept on a private research database for consideration by the project’s
co-curators. As the project continues in the years to come, those selected will
be notified of their inclusion in new endeavours.
Submissions are
welcome at any time, however the mid-year deadline for 2013 activities is July
30, 2013.
