Sculture e disegni di Berlinde De Bruyckere

Lo S.M.A.K. di Gent ha in corso una bella mostra su Berlinde De Bruyckere fino al 15 Febbario.

‘Sculptures & Drawings. 2000-2014’ at the S.M.A.K. is the first mid-career presentation of the oeuvre of Berlinde De Bruyckere (1964, Ghent). This exhibition shows a hundred-odd works which have so far rarely if ever been seen in Belgium, though in the last decade the artist has exhibited in many of the most important international museums and institutions.

The exhibition does not give us a chronological survey, but is conceived as a promenade taking in a select choice of drawings, sculptures and installations that bring to light the evolution and nuances of the oeuvre. It combines the core motifs of De Bruyckere’s oeuvre: the vulnerability of man, which is her chief theme, and the suffering body, which is the source of her visual idiom. The presentation includes earlier works in textile and horse skin that gained the artist her international renown. The sculptures in wax evolve gradually from human bodies to creatures midway between plant and animal. The pivotal work is ‘Kreupelhout – Cripplewood’ (2012-13), the monumental installation which has previously only been shown at the 2013 Venice Biennale. Finally, drawings are an essential part of this exhibition. They are hung in series in the same rooms as the sculptures and enrich the associations and cross-connections that relate all the works to each other.

A modified version of the exhibition ‘Berlinde De Bruyckere. Sculptures & Drawings. 2000 – 2014’ will then go to the Municipal Museum at The Hague in the Netherlands (Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, 28 February - 23 May 2015), and from 18 April 2015 will be on at the Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria.

Berlinde De Bruyckere Monograph

The substantial monograph being published by Mercatorfonds to coincide with the exhibition is conceived as an artist’s book. It documents the last 25 years of Berlinde De Bruyckere’s career, including visual source material from her rich archives. The editor-in-chief, Angela Mengoni, is contributing an essay to the publication, as are Emmanuel Alloa and Gary Carrion-Murayari. Philippe Van Cauteren, the artistic director of the S.M.A.K., adds a personal letter to the artist.

Fra i tantissimi eventi di metà ottobre, della settimana londinese dell'arte, uno dei più avvincenti sarà l’asta che Christie organizza con quasi cinquanta opere provenienti dalla collezione di Charles Saatchi, che saranno messe al bando il 17 Ottobre, dopo l’esposizione presso gli spazi della casa d’aste dal 12 al 18 Ottobre.

Un’occasione eccezionale di poter acquisire pezzi importanti degli artisti attualmente più quotati nel mondo, fra cui Tracey Emin, Jake e Dinos Chapman, Sterling Ruby, Berlinde De Bruyckere e David Altmejd.

The Shape of Things to Come: New Sculpture - Sculture alla Saatchi Gallery di Londra

Soprattutto corpi, forme, fisicità pura.

La scultura contemporanea è tutto questo e nella grande collettiva alla Saatchi Gallery di Londra possiamo vedere alcuni degli artisti di punta di questo universo espressivo.

Una variegata raccolta di opere che nei grandi spazi dalle bianche pareti funziona veramente bene.

Fra le opere più affascinanti sicuramente lo stupendo Eskimo Blues II di Peter Buggenhout i suggestivi Summit di Kris Martin, un’interpretazione picassiana romantica con “The Shooting Lesson Seht der Mensch” di Folkert de Jong.

Particolarmente fisici i lavori di Rebecca Warren e Thomas Houseago. Inquietante anche il corpo, ma equino, di Berlinde de Bruyckere. Più onirico quello di David Altmejd, che già alla Biennale del 2007 aveva affascinato con il suo mix fra fisico e naturale.

Fra tanti affermati nomi ci sono anche alcuni storici come John Baldessari, con un’opera che segna un modo più ironico, traccia di tempi lontani più sereni.

In generale si prova una sensazione di osmosi e disagio, rari i momenti più leggeri, tanta inquietudine e malessere segnano il nostro tempo, molto complesso e difficile, che giustamente trova un riflesso nell’arte contemporanea.

Dopo tante mostre troppo disarmoniche questa mi pare pienamente riuscita, gli spazi di questo maestoso edificio rendono molto di più in questa funzione che per le tante mostre di quadri o fotografie che tendono a perdersi troppo negli ampi saloni.
